I became interested in osteopathic medicine when I entered high school. As I was applying for high school I knew that I wanted to be part of the medical field but I did not really look into the high schools that offered any sort of programs that can help me gain experience. I discovered my high school when my cousin told me her high school offered a medical assistant program. When the science department accepted me into the program in my sophomore year, I did not know what to expect. I thought the program would just be an extra class I will be taking in high school, a class that will be teaching me the basics of anatomy, pathology, etc. However, this program exceeded my expectations, it showed me so much more than I thought and showed me how …show more content…
I learned about various treatments and one in particular caught my attention, Daratumumab. This target therapy for Multiple Myeloma patients was still undergoing experimental trials at Mount Sinai and I saw how the Myeloma team took precautions with this drug. Kristen not only showed me the infusion center but also the OR. I indulged myself into the surgeon's work that at times I did not know what time it was, the time that I am supposed to leave for the day. The myeloma team showed me how the drugs given to patients affects the patient's body and how it can cause side effects and such; the surgeons are given an objective to help those patients to the best of their ability to make sure that because of their treatments, the risk factors shouldn’t be the cause of their death. Treatments are given the patients to help them decrease the severances of any sort of disease, disorder, and especially cancer. After this experience, I acknowledged that I want to help the patients by becoming a surgeon. I know that I can accomplish so much in this profession because I know that being a surgeon holds much responsibility, I will be in charge of the patient's life and I know that I will hold the burden if anything were to happen, but I must stay
A 54 year old female was presented with complaints of lethargy, excessive thirst and diminished appetite. Given the fact that these symptoms are very broad and could be the underlying cause of various diseases, the physician decided to order a urinalysis by cystoscope; a comprehensive diagnostic chemistry panel; and a CBC with differential, to acquire a better understanding on his patient health status. The following abnormal results caught the physician’s attention:
I came into this course with a lot of questions in regards to pathology, as well as patient care and how medical practitioners are affected emotionally by it. It was difficult hearing how patients are being diagnosed with cancer and even worse when they are told that they have a short time to live. I once heard in a hospital meeting, that an oncologist sees death every day and that nullifies the pain of losing a patient. I learned that this isn’t true. It is the emotional bond with a patient that helps medical practitioner value life and provide the best quality of life they
Life’s experiences, work, and education have prepared me to further my education. I will achieve this goal with the ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and provide my patients with the best evidence based care possible. I will also have the ability to impact change in quality improvement, policy and procedure, and overall patient care with evidence based
Presently, my extracurricular and academic interests are combined in my two year Health Science class. The class provides real-life medical situations that I may come in contact with in the future. Like any health science class, we study the body, in both its’ functional and dysfunctional state. This survey class also includes an introduction to equipment, medical protocol, and ethical issues. A sense of teamwork guides our procedures. Next semester, I will study at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Ramstein High School’s Career Practicum program. After initial on-the-job application of classroom learning, we will work with patients, supervised by the hospital staff. Living so close to a hospital that services thousands of seriously injured patients every year provides opportunities that other students lack, even in their college programs.
All my life I have known that I wanted to be involved in the medical field. At first, I wanted to be a Physical Therapist. The only problem was, I wasn’t excited about my possible future career. Then, I got offered a job doing in home care. I then knew I wanted to widened
With many medical careers students often get confused on what they really want to study, I have faced this problem myself and I know is not that easy due too many choices. There are many options ranging from healthcare to medical jobs. I have thoughtfully chosen to enter the program for Medical Assistant (MA). Ever since I was a child, I’ve spent most of childhood years at the Hospital, I was diagnosed with a rare condition that had to be treated continuously, this meant that I had to be going to checkups every three months so I was close to doctors, surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologist, medical assistants, etc. I remember at first I was frightened just of the thought of going to the doctor but after a few visits I got used to. The doctors and nurses were nice and caring and made me feel comfortable that I end up enjoying my doctor’s visits every time. Since then I decided I wanted to work in the medical field, this is my goal since I can remember. I have always enjoyed helping people in any way I possibly can. I chose to be a Medical Assistant because I think is great way to start my medical career going and programs are practical and not long.
I signed up for classes such as AP Biology, Medical Microbiology, and Physics in order to strengthen the scientific backbone I know I will need for a career in this area. I even joined Health Occupation Students of America, or HOSA, and started looking more into specific areas of study that would give me a good background for the field. My colorguard instructor introduced me to kinesiology, or the study of human movement, and I started applying the knowledge I gained from what I researched to my performance and personal recoveries from injuries I had from dancing. I was really starting to love
The subject came so naturally to me and I decided to continue my enrollment in sports medicine courses throughout my high school education. As my senior year of high school concluded, I explored the idea of a career in physical therapy by job shadowing at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute (ISMI). After observing the PTs at ISMI, I was immediately drawn to a career in physical medicine. A few months later, I started my education at Idaho State and felt exactly like I did when I started sports medicine in high school. I was absolutely enthralled with my classes, naturally excelled in all of my coursework, and always had PT school in the back of my mind. I knew I would have to work extremely hard to develop a strong undergraduate transcript and build a competitive application. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have worked relentlessly to maintain academic excellence and currently have a 3.91 GPA. I have also succeeded in making the College of Education’s Dean’s List for five semesters. Unfortunately, I did not receive the honor of making the Dean’s List on one occasion, as I was .02 points below the minimum
...forming bench research at Barry University and Weill Cornell Medical College in the Traveler’s Research Fellowship, I have been exposed to the side of medicine where scientists work every day to find cures for diseases and save lives. Experiencing different aspects of medicine has made me a more competent individual to thrive in this field and has deepened my interest and passion to pursue medicine as a career.I believe that those who fight with so little against so much truly need others to help them in their struggle. Being a physician is not only becoming a successful professional. I will work hard to bring about necessary changes to end social disparities, so that more groups in society receive the best healthcare. By making a difference in their lives, I will receive rewarding experiences that are worth all the hard work and sacrifice my chosen career requires.
I have never heard of the profession before and I was interested in finding out what it was because it was one of my primary careers. I began researching Occupational Therapy and became intrigued from the moment I read it's meaning. "Occupational Therapy assist individuals with disabilities, injured , elderly with health problems or regaining skills, to keep living a full filled life by getting them back to functioning using day to day daily activities" (occupations). I printed copies of all the information I found on Occupational Therapy and researched schools. There was the option to go for an OTA, (Occupational Therapy Assistant) at a Community College. I set my mind and decided I would work toward an OTA. Though I thought I was finally set and finally found my career path, life reminded me I was now out of High School and responsible for contributing to some of my family's financial obligations. Going to College was my choice it was never something my parent's ever talked to me about or mentioned. I come from a family who has migrated from South America and their only goals was to work long hours at manufacturing job to make a
Although I have great goals to help people, my grand wish cannot be granted without a great amount of effort on my part. I decided to take part in activities that would help me reach my goals and to ready myself for that field of work. My extracurricular activities and my electives showed proof of my interest in the medical field over time. I made an extra effort to look for activities and classes that could help me on the way to becoming a doctor. My first step was
Since starting this class, introduction to health care, I have begun to think about what the future holds for me and what I will pursue with my college degree. At this point in time my career goal is to become a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery. I plan on working in a hospital setting where I can continue to learn and practice my profession. Five years after all my schooling and achieving my license, professionally I see myself working at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York, which is a teaching hospital. I would be working on and with patients, while still learning as I practice my previous knowledge. I would be seeing patients with injuries such as an ankle sprain, evaluating x-rays, and possibly sitting on and
Spending a whole shift observing the functioning of the hematology and oncology clinic at children hospital was a great educational experience. The day started by being on the OR observing two different lumbar punctures being performed, they lasted each one no more that 15 to 20 minutes but the experience took me back to the process of count down and surgery roles and rules. The patients were closed on age and they came accompanied by their mothers to the OR, the family stayed until the child was ready to surgery, parents were called back to be by the children side when it was time for them to woke up for family support. There were only to surgeries scheduled for the whole day so after OR was closed, I was assigned to shadow a nurse on the oncology department. The nurse care started triaging the patients after the patient was assigned to a room, constantly communicate with the Physician assistance, nurse practitioner or MD about the patient requirements and needs. I saw a lot of blood draws in order to get patients lab values and infusions to provide medications and chemo therapy. I was explained that two nurses are required to participate during chemo therapies to be able to verify the patient, medication, rate, order, etc. In order to be able to provide chemo therapy nurses need to go to a training class and pass an exam due
Going into the pre-med program at the ATA I had previously thought about being an Orthodontist. It was something i found very very interesting. Going through the pre med class and interning at a pediatric dental office over the summer i decided that was far from what i wanted to do. I am almost positive that i would like to become a Dermatologist or something along those lines. After graduating high school i want to attend Horry Georgetown Technical College. After this two year program i will transfer to a four year college. I'm not 100% sure on what college i would like to attend but i'm strongly thinking about attending Charleston Southern. I choose this because I have always been interesting helping people who are in need. I have always
I started to explore the different fields of medicine by working as a Medical Scribe in the Emergency Department, ER tech in Trauma Centers, getting involved in research, volunteering at hospitals and taking high level science classes. This will enhance my knowledge and experience i...
