How much freedom can you have in a relationship? “The story of an Hour” is a short story by Kate Chopin. Chopin shows how sometimes marriages can not be happily ever after, she shows another perspective of marriage. Throughout the story, Mrs. Mallard experiences the excitement of freedom, however, later on, when she learns her husband was actually alive she becomes disappointed. Chopin, through the use of symbolism, defines Mrs. Mallard's restrictive lifestyle, illuminates her different feelings about rebirth and explain her death. Chopin through the symbolism presents Mrs.Mallard suffocating marriage life. Mrs.Mallard's "Heart trouble" symbolizes love, however, love that causes physical and emotional pain. Her emotional pain could've been from her marriage. During that time(1894) many women could not pick their partner; Mrs. Mallard represents women during that time where their freedom within marriage was limiting. "she had loved him-- sometimes. Often she had not" expresses exactly how women around that time could not pick their own partner. The author also points out how Mrs.Mallard "wept" because of her husband's death but suddenly stops. Mrs.Mallard all she can think of was all the freedom she has now. She went upstairs to her room. Still crying she's looking out through the "open window" and sitting in her "armchair". How the author explains what Mrs.Mallard sees out "open window" it is representing the freedom and hope that awaits for her. A new outlook on life. Along with her "physical exhaustion" releasing she is also finally discharged from her oppressed life; released from Mr. Mallard. She experiences excitement and exhilaration from her freedom she has now. She hears the sparrows singing and the smell of rebirth which is rain. She feels young and free
