Ford and Woolf use Mrs. Dalloway and The Good Soldier to bring attention to religion, mental illness, love and ambition. In Mrs. Dalloway Septimus is trapped because he was once a soldier. Septimus was once a young man who was very sentimental. Septimus was into poetry and things of that nature which allowed him to express his emotions. However, he joined World War one to become a man. Thus, this ultimately led him to be trapped. Although Septimus excelled as a soldier, he lost all sentimental nature. Because of being shell shocked, he cannot express as much emotions he wanted. Dowell never noticed that he was trapped in a relationship with her because she could deceive him. Shortly after Florence and Dowell got married, Dowell finds out about Florence’s “heart” problem. Florence’s fake heart problem meant that she could engage in sexual activities with her husband and she also could travel because these things put her in at risk from seriously damaging her heart. This news made Dowell Florence’s caretaker. He devoted his whole life purpose to making take care of his wife to ensure her safety. However, Florence uses her “heart” condition to cheat on Dowell without him being suspicious about her whereabouts. Dowell only found about her lies when Florence committed suicide. Ford uses the Dowell’s being trapped and blinded by love as a representation people being deceptive. Dowell had not doubted that he wife was lying to him and going behind his back to do cheat on him.
