The role of Mr. Porter’s in this book is one of the most crucial characters. Mr. Porter was the last hope for Hannah. Briefly, Mr. Porter was the counselor in the school, but he was not supposed to be in that position, he is the English professor. At first reading the cassette made me think that Mr. Porter can be blame for the death of Hannah, because Mr. Porter basically did nothing about, just told Hannah to forget about it. Initially, it seems like the less comprehensive and unprofessional responses. However, analyzing the texts I couldn’t blame Mr. Porter, he tried, unsuccessfully, but he tried. But sometimes there’s nothing left to do but move on. At this point I can see that Mr. Porter is not able to assess a student properly. Reading the cassette, he did what he was able to do. Basically, Mr. Porter listened to Hannah, however Mr. Porter did not want to dig for more. Mr. Porter was superficial. Mr. Porter probably had a better chance if he let Hannah to talk more about Hannah’s problems, instead of going straight to the point. I felt like a Mental Status Examination will be the best tool for Mr. Porter to have at that moment. A quick suicidal behavior questionnaire, because of those hints about finishing life. Once again I can’t blame Mr. Porter but he should have done something better. Looking broader, the school has some part of blame on this issue, why would you hire a teacher with technically, little experience counseling students. Further, it seems like Mr. Porter did not know anything about their students other than their names. Lastly, Mr. Porter is a teacher at the moment he gets the tapes he will have to turn the tapes over to officials. This means more than one person may end up in jail. This is an Ethical Dilemma that I do not want to go through, even Mr. Porter can be accused for lacking on diagnosing Hannah issue. Once again how to blame him, Mr. Porter is a teacher. I am reading the book Shooter by Walter Dean Myers. In my book the main character's name is Cameron Porter. He is a seventeen-year-old boy that attended a school called Madison High. There one of his closest companions Leonard, Len for short, has killed someone and maybe himself. I have only read about half of the book and only two of the five sections, so I don’t know exactly what led up to everything. But from what I’ve read, It seems like both Cameron and Len came from troubled backgrounds. Like both of Cameron’s parents are well off people and have lot’s of money but he doesn’t have a good relationship with his father because his father doesn’t treat him well and his mother doesn’t really notice him either. This case involves a sophomore at a high school named Christine Franklin, who alleged that she was sexually harassed and abused by a teacher and sports coach by the name of Andrew Hill. These allegations were occurring from 1986-1988, a total of two years. These allegations included Hill having explicit conversations with Franklin, forcing her to kiss him, and forceful intercourse on school grounds. Franklin claimed that she let teachers and administrators know about the harassment and that other students were going through the same harassment. First of all, he realized the stereotyped the white people labeled very early in school and that these labels followed them throughout their education levels. He equally knew that labels have influence on how teachers and staff react to kids and it contribute the quality of the education Trent will obtain. Joe did not want such a thing to happen to Trent; Joe showed enthusiasm when he was authorized by her field instructor to pursue the case. He started by gathering all the information that is relevant to make this case successful. Joe set a goal through research by reading Trent school record and collaborating with Trent’s teacher, psychologist, and all the staff involved in the case. Joe called Trent father over the phone and asked some questions, which resulted in a face to face interview at school. This process helped Joe to understand the genesis of Trent problem. Joe developed a helping relationship with the family that aid her to follow up through home visits, which is where the family was comfortable to open up and talk. In the meeting at the Trent’s father house Joe was able to get the information that aided him to initiate the action plan for the case. Joe carried the plan by having several meetings with the school psychologist, the teacher, the aide, Trent, and his parents. Through these meetings the intervention plan was devised. Joe identified goals that will help Trent maintain the appropriate behavior at school and at home by using a chart. The chart says Trent should keep his hands and feet to himself, using good manners, walk in line, and sits in his seat correctly. Alex said in his testimony “I gave a fake number for my parent – I knew I’d want to skip some days and not get in trouble when I did.” (11) Here, Alex is saying that he had already planned to skip school which explains the fact that Alex Billings missed a lot of school days. In her testimony, his mother stated, “He had missed more days of school than he had attended! Also, his grades were terrible! And I did not receive so much as a phone call about this from KHS! They didn’t even notice that he wasn’t there.” (16) Of course, his mother wouldn’t receive a phone call. Her son had the audacity to give the school a fake number, making it impossible for the school to get ahold of her. “With school as bad as it was, video games became my main priority. I would stay up all night to beat a level.” (12) It is likely that Billings just wanted to stay home from school and play video games, and his absences had nothing to do with Pearson’s comments whatsoever. CJ Pearson should not be charged with intentional infliction of emotional distress because it is very clear that Billings had another motive to stay home.
All in all, the story was rather sad but eye-opening. I believe Porter’s approach to writing this story allowed readers to reflect back on their own lives and examine both the good and not-so-good times. It shows people not to just live life through the motions, but rather, to look at it as beautiful journey as no one wants to end up like Granny Weatherall and realize that with she never really lived.

The main character Katherine is from Barbados because her grandpa had just died and she was traveling to America to live with her Uncle and Aunt who did not even know she she was coming. When she arrived her Aunt whose name was Rachel received her with open arms but her Uncle was not as open and wanted her to earn her keep. There was another character who was unmentioned for a while, her name was Hannah Tupper. Kits initial reaction to Hannah was anxiety and fear But she then softened up to Hannah. Her first interaction with Hannah was a helpful one in her time of need and self pity. The view and opinion of Hannah changed through the book from a kind old lady to admiration and unconditional love.
In 1915 divorce was barely even a recognizable word, and to claim a form of irreconcilable differences and physical abuse was even more frowned upon. Porter's divorce signified not only a major alteration in her own personal life, but also the beginning of the "modernist" period. (Gilbert 1205) However when Porter changes her name to her grandmother's name, this could be taken as a new identity for herself. A South Carolina teacher by the name of Leigh Anne Arthur, is suing her school district after a student shared an intimate picture on social media, leading to her losing her job. On February 19th, a student was reported to have grabbed the partially nude photo of Leigh Anne Arthur, who is a teacher at Union County High School, from her phone when she left it on her desk while on hallway patrol duty. Following the incident Arthur resigned after the district superintendent told her she bore some of the responsibility for keeping racy photos private and gave her the option to go through a dismissal process or resign. A lawyer who represents Arthur, Jessica Salvini, told NBC News that she filed the lawsuit on Friday against the school district and David Eubanks, its superintendent. Based off a statement obtained by NBC affiliate WYFF in Greenville, Arthur said "The Lawsuit is based on the false accusations made by Dr. David Eubanks against me along with policies and due process not appropriately followed by Union County School District." In addition, after charges were filed, Eubanks stood by his belief that Arthur was at fault. Also, an astounding 17,000 people have signed a petition to bring Arthur back to the high school, where she taught mechanical engineering and computer programming. That same night, I walked by Hannah’s cell and I saw her staring down at a newspaper clip out of a young teenager shaking hands with another man. I recognized that the boy was the man who visited today. Could he be Hannah’s son? If he is, then why hadn’t he visit her all this time? Hannah brushed her fingers across the books on her shelf, and took out a sheet of paper and started writing in it. This time, her eyes turned grey and they were empty, but free.
First, I would like to make some broad generalizations about Katherine Anne Porter’s stories. The selections of stories that I have read could be considered stories about transition, passage from an old world to a new. There is a prolific amount of life and death imagery related to changes from slavery to freedom, aristocracy to middle-class, and birth to death. Her stories contain characters from several generations and the narratives move through out this multi-generational consciousness. The stories are as much about antitheses as the move from tradition to modernity or new ideas/ideals. The narrative perspectives illustrate the chasm between old and young/old and new.
