In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, a beautiful bond between a father and a daughter is seen in the strong relationship between Elizabeth and her father, Mr. Bennet. Admiring Elizabeth’s intelligence and maturity that all the other Bennet sisters, except for Jane, seem to lack, Mr. Bennet deems her as his favorite daughter. In return, Mr. Bennet’s level headedness and sensibility earns him Elizabeth’s respect. Importantly, his logical and calm disposition comforts her in light of her mother’s foolishness and absurdity. While Mrs. Bennet concerns herself with wealth, social status, and how well her daughters can benefit her reputation, Mr. Bennet genuinely cares about his daughters’ happiness.

Bennet to fully accept him because he too once believed in the same kind of initial love with Mrs. Bennet. It is thus important how Elizabeth proves that she is compatible with Darcy. She states that Darcy is “amiable” and has similar characteristics as her. They are both prideful and stubborn and get along well, proving that they aren’t complete opposites. Due to Mr. Bennet’s undying respect for his daughter, Elizabeth’s most important argument surfaces when she proves that Darcy is worthy enough to be her husband. Holding Elizabeth to such high regards, Mr. Bennet won’t be satisfied marrying Elizabeth off with just anyone. Saying “your lively talents would place you in the greatest danger in an unequal marriage,” he states how he believes Elizabeth is too special and exceptional to marry someone who is not as equally respectable, amiable, and intelligent as she is. Elizabeth thus explains that Darcy is worthy by stating all of his “good qualities” and explaining how Darcy helped Lydia when she eloped with Wickham. This sheds positive light to all of Darcy’s good characteristics and shows how he would do anything for Elizabeth. Darcy is then able to gain Mr. Bennet’s respect and prove that he is deserving of Elizabeth as his final note of acceptance states “I could not have parted with you, Lizzy, to anyone less worthy.” With Mr. Bennet finally saying that he deserves her, Elizabeth proves successful in her efforts to prove that her marriage with Darcy complies with her father’s
