I attended the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Kiesler on January 25th. They performed Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and all pieces from The Planets suite by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). I loved the venue of the performance, it was very warm and inviting. Of all the pieces performed, I think I liked Mars, The Bringer of War and Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity the most. The titles of the pieces really helped immerse me into the music, they helped tell the story of the music. I didn’t like the Mozart as much as I thought I would and I think that was because I haven’t played it before. According to the Wikipedia page for Mozart, at the age of five he would write little pieces, and play them for his father, who wrote them down. He was considered a child prodigy, and his family would go on travels around Europe and play concerts. In September of 1791, Mozart fell ill, but died in December. Gustav Theodore Holst was born September 21, 1874, and was an English composer, arranger, and teacher. He began composing around the age of 12. When composing The Planets, the concept was astrological rather than astronomical, which is why Earth isn’t included. When a Pluto was discovered in 1930, Holst had no desire to write a movement for the ninth planet. As a music student who is working and is also on the executive board for an organization, I hardly have time to do things that I enjoy, and that includes going to concerts both at EMU and elsewhere. I had so many connections that were made, whether it was for a few seconds or the whole piece. I always love Holst’s work, and The Planets will forever be one of my favorites. I played Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity in an advanced youth orchestra in high school, and hearing it performed brought back many fond memories.
