The movie Coach Carter is a very inspirational and motivational movie. Coach Carter takes over coaching his high school basketball team. The team is a group of students who are rude, undisciplined, and out of control. Coach shows many different levels of negotiations throughout the movie. He uses many tools to accomplish his goals such as the want factor, collaboration, crafting agreements, and negotiation change.
The move consists of six main characters. Coach Carter and principle Garrison are the two guiding adults in the movie. Coach is pushing to make sure the students are first great students and then great basketball players. There are four factors in creating the want factor. You need to appreciate the other person’s situation, personal feelings, ideas, and last but not least the face (Kolb & Williams, 2003,p. 202-203). Coach Carter sets asides his needs to focus on the students’ needs. He even makes his business second to the students’ needs. Coach explains the life after high school if they continue on the track they are heading down. They will be heading to two places, jail or death. The statistics show that very few students graduate and even fewer end up going to college. So coach tells the students that he will do everything he can to make sure they all graduate and go to college. He shows the students they have a choice. Cruz, on of the basketball players, shows a huge dislike to the coach’s way. He even goes as far as trying to punch Coach. After he quits the team and realizes he has made a wrong decision, he begs for his position back. So coach gives him an unachievable ultimatum of 1000 push-ups and 1000 “suicides”. These tools also provide incentives to keep the negotiation on track (Kolb &Williams, 2003,p. 318) Coach shows the students that they can achieve new possibilities and opportunities. One example is when Cruz went to coach’s house after his cousin was shot. Coach was there with open arms and moral support. He was able to show him there is a greater purpose. Another example is Battles struggles with outside situations and poor grades. He takes the lockout the hardest because he shines on the court. Later, when coach finds out that his brother recently passed away, he allows him to return to the team after he apologizes. At the end of the movie, it shows how the team graduated and a lot of them chose to attend college. This shows that all of Coaches efforts went to good
