Monument 14 is an exciting, compelling novel, written by Emmy Laybourne with 352 pages that tells the story of 14 kids that are living through what seems to be the apocalypse. It was published by Square Fish Inc. on May 28, 2013 and it is a realistic fiction novel. I chose to read this book because the informant at the bookstore told me that it was popular and had a great story to it, which she described to me briefly. I hoped to have a book that put me in a situation that would not normally happen with lots of action, adventure, and unpredictability. The setting in this book is about 30 years in the future; the world has become much more technology based, with each person owning his or her own device that is run by the network. The network …show more content…
The story also takes place during a chemical spill and the kids are right in the middle of it, and the chemicals effect each person differently. Throughout the story, the setting effects the plot time and time again, so it is very important to the story. The beginning of the story takes place as Dean is on the bus to school. Suddenly, giant pieces of hail begin raining down from the sky. Their bus and another, that is right in front of them, begin to search for cover, which they find in the form of a Greenway Department Store. The bus that Dean is traveling on crashes in the parking lot, but the other is safe. The survivors from the crash run into the safe bus and the bus crashes through the glass into the department store. The driver of the bus was killed by the impact, so it was up to the kids to find a way to survive. Together they …show more content…
He is 17 years old, and has a strong sense of what to do in difficult situations. An example of this is when he was able to save the kids from the chemicals by closing the door just in the nick of time. He is also an excellent cook, and is able to keep the kids alive by making meals for them. Lastly, he is a great decision maker, and is also very selfless, and an example of this is when he chooses to stay behind in the store so that he doesn’t endanger the others. However, his is also hasty in making decisions, so if they are wrong, he is stuck with the consequences. An example of this is when Dean chooses to just barge outdoors to check on their world, and he begins attacking his brother Alex, because the chemicals made him
There were many themes illustrated throughout the memoir, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael beah. These themes include survival/resilience despite great suffering, the loss of innocence, the importance of family/heritage, the power of hope and dreams, the effects of injustice on the individual, and the importance of social and political responsibility. Every theme listed has a great meaning, and the author puts them in there for the readers to analyze and take with them when they finish reading the book.
They always say to never judge a book by its cover, but my first impression I got when I looked at this book was that people gathered around a bus waiting for their family members to get off. After reading The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang I then realized that the people on the cover weren't just waiting around for their family but finding their loved ones they once lost. When I first started reading this book I was a little nervous because I never read that many books and I feel that the reason why I don’t is because not many books stand out to me. In school I would have to read books for the class or for a book report but get bored or my attention couldn’t stay focused. Just a few pages into this book and I seemed interested in what was
The theme for this dystopian characteristic is this; one can still have faith even when they don’t have a whole lot to be hopeful for.
The theme of this novel is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death. The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to, even right up to the end."
The Hadley parents begin to notice how much time their children are actually spending using technology. “ ‘The kids live for the nursery.’ ” They decide that maybe locking up the nursery for awhile would be good for them. After all “ ‘Too much of anything isn’t good for anyone.’ ” The kids do whatever they can to
As the birds are singing their sweet melody, the terrain of Arlington National Cemetery is filled with sadness. Although the brilliant rays of sun are shinning through the thick colossal treetops, there is a chill in the air. While watching the mourners, the feeling of their sorrows is all too real.
themes. One that stuck out to me is Fitzgerald expressing how the idea of true love is just a
...ng the underlying theme that drives the story and the movie, propels the reader and viewer to rekindle the desire to hope above all else because hope is all one has in devastating as well as dire needs. Hope overcomes despair, permits others to see your “inner light” to develop integrity which connects with honesty and trust. Hope is the inspiration to continue to live regardless of the circumstances. Red may have narrated; “Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.” But, Andy Dufresne states it best: “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
... the theme of a story can be seen in the three short stories Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, What You Pawn I Will Redeem by Sherman Alexie, and The Moustache by Robert Cormier. In the first it helps develop the theme that we truly do not want equality among all people, in fact we want all people to have the same opportunities. In the second it helps with the theme that generosity can get you far in life and that helping others can in turn help you. Finally, in the last it helps develop the theme that one should not attempt to grow up faster than they already are. That is how symbolism can be seen being used by authors to help develop a theme throughout a story.
Another theme is the ability of a person to have some dignity even when it feels like the world is against you. These themes remain important today because it teaches us what can happen to a person if their dreams are never fulfilled. For example, Walter had a dream to open a liquor store, however this dream never came true after Willy (the person Walter gave the money too to open the store) betrayed him. He broke down and felt hopeless. It also teaches us that dignity is important, Walter also portrayed his need for dignity after he rejects the offer of Mr. Linder from the“home improvement
There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.
A theme for the martian chronicles is, don’t let the past rule the present. The meaning of this theme is what has happened, has already happened and you shouldn’t let it take over what you do now. This is a theme because in the martian chronicles there are many times that people have the chance to go on living without the past, but instead to continue in the past.
I believe that these themes align with strengths I have. Some of them I find more fitting but they all match me and my natural abilities. Knowing my strengths helps me learn what I need to focus on in order to excel in the future.
