The Gifted Army Plan places emphasis on collaborating with schools and organizations. While attempting to acquire schools, it is important to have knowledge and understand the different types of schools and what they value the most. STEM schools and Montessori Schools both value hands-on and problem solving skills; however, these two schools vary in many ways, which can be critical in deciding which to target. There are many STEM schools/programs in the U.S, with more than 50 located in Georgia. The meaning behind STEM schools is in the name, which stands for: science, technology, engineering, and math. The components that make up Montessori schools are: multi-age student groups, uninterrupted blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activity. Since the book is a mixture of different levels, ages from 7 to 12 are able to work and learn from each other. The Talents Unlimited Model was created under the philosophy that all students, both those identified as gifted and those not, would benefit from enrichment programs. The model is used to educate teachers on how to use differentiated instruction to use “higher order cognitive tasks to help students with varying abilities use their preferred thinking talents to manipulate instruction to solve problems, see broad relationships, evaluate varying perspectives, draw comparisons among disparate viewpoints, and predict causes and effects” (Schlichter, 2009, p. 434).
Since 2010, there were 45 states that have adopted the same educational standards called Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The initiative is sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers and seeks to establish consistent education standards across the states. The Common Core Standards is initiative state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English and Mathematical standards. These standards help to educate all of the students equally, they help children who move from state to state, as well as they help to prepare students for college and workplace. The common core standard helps to provide a clear understanding for teachers and parents of what is expected of the students to learn. The state standards are in place for students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. They govern what students should know from one grade to the next. The State Board of Education decides on the essential knowledge and skills that each students should acquire. This is done with the participation of “educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers” (TX School Law Bulletin). The curriculum was adopted in the late 1990s with a foundation curriculum development, with subjects including: English, health education, physical education, fine arts, economics, technology application, career development, Spanish language arts and careers and technical development (Texas Education Agency, 2016). The movement toward standardization is mainly concerned with the school district’s responsibility to generate students that are proficient in basic reading, writing and math skills. Education is very important especially in this day and age. What school one attends and how they perceive school to be is a huge factor in one’s life success. There has been research done in the past few years proving that students who receive a Montessori education will prosper academically more so than those who receive a traditional education (Ryniker and Shoho, 2001). Traditional schools typically follow teacher based philosophies and the Montessori education is student centered. On average, children enjoy student based philosophy classrooms. Therefore, they are much more in tuned to what they are learning and that benefits their educational career. Having fun while learning is the key to keeping children engaged.
The types of games that children play change dramatically compared to early childhood. In addition to the activities that they already play, they start to strive for a challenge. Middle childhood is the time when children acquire skills such as reading and arithmetic. During this time children start to play games that are complicated and rule oriented. Because of these changes, children begin to play games based on strategy such as playing cards and other games that test their mind. They play games such as Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh. These card games require children to count, remember, and plan strategies. By playing these games, children begin to plan consciously, coordinate actions, evaluate their progress, and modify their plans and strategies based on reflection and evaluation.
