Some people may agree with the Montessori approach because it helps to promote unstructured play and it has been proved that having unstructured play can help children to reach their full potential. It will also allow them to learn at their own pace and they can take their time to complete tasks. Montessori is similar to Reggio Emilia because Reggio Emilia approach allows children to stay on a task for as long as they want to. This will help children o learn new skills and allow them take control of their learning journey. On the other hand, people may disagree with the Montessori approach because it has not much of a structure for children. If the practitioners uses Montessori approach then the child may delay in a few areas of their development. It is important that children are challenged as this will help them to keep focused and learn new skills. However, if we use Montessori then the child would not be challenged as children are allow to choose what they can learn and what activities they do. A practitioner can extend the child’s learning by giving them variety of activities which meets the child’s individual’s needs. The Foundation Phase has put some aspects of the Montessori Approach by having a combination of child-initiative play and adult led activities. In my setting, I have seen the practitioners using Montessori approach as at the start of the day we allow the child to explore by themselves and we will only get involved if there are any risks. Doing this in the setting will allow the child to be more independent and allow them to have a better understanding of risk. I have come to conclusion that Montessori has impact on practice as it allows the child to be more independent. However, I think the Foundation phases is a better curriculum as it gives practitioners on how to extend the child’s learning through play and allows us to work closely with the children in order for them to reach full potential.
