Moira’s Birthday party is a funny book full of chaos and fun. The book starts with Moira asking her parents for a birthday party. She wants to invite grades k-6 to her party but her parents say that's too many and to only invite six kids. She goes to school the next day and gets cared away and invites k-6 but doesn't tell her parents. On her birthday six kids show up and her parents start the party but soon 100 more kids show up. Her parents freak out and start worrying about how to feed all the kids. Moira comes up with an idea to feed them all. She calls the pizza place and a bakery and asks for 100 of each. They say that's impossible and can only do six, so they sent them six. This isn't enough to feed all the kids, so the kids go and bring
I’ve been reading Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. For our first book meeting I was absent, but our group decided on reading through Chapter 4, which was about 64 pages. The book follows three main characters; Herta, a German doctor; Caroline, an ex-Broadway actress; and Kasia, a Catholic teenager living in Poland. Each chapter switches the perspective to one of these characters and tells part of their story. The structure of this book really helps me keep reading because every chapter is different. If you are bored with the chapter you are on, you know the next chapter will be breath of fresh air. It’s hard to fully capture the personality from only one or two chapters, but I’m not in love with all of the characters. Caroline, who works as

The Party is Over by Mike Lofgren goes undercover to reveal what politics is like behind the screen. I believe this book was more for criticizing the GOP and Republicans that the Democrats. The GOP and Republicans are a lot different in politics now than they were decades ago. The book talks about how the Republicans are against the government, how Republicans are anti-science and anti-intellectual, and also how they view religious rights. All of these lead to problems with politics. The Democrats were brought up than the Republicans, but were still mentioned. They too did some damage in today’s politics. This book informs us on how the Republicans went crazy and Democrats became useless, and how it’s become a problem.
Julia Alvarez in her book, Once Upon a Quinceañera, explores the quince tradition from cultural, historical and personal angles. Herein, she seeks to clarify some of the myths and ideas that surround this tradition from the notion that quinceañeras are from old Aztec traditions to the idea that this rite has been passed down from one Latino generation to another. She discovers that most contemporary quinces are firsts for many families and are different from those of the past. Consequently, the tradition depicts a group that is experiencing transformation who seek to establish their roots in a past that is somehow bleak. Many have often described the US has a melting pot of cultures. Therefore, Americans from different cultures find themselves amalgamating their values with those of the American society, thus affecting the overall culture of their communities. In Once Upon a Quinceañera, the author demonstrate and applies the cultural myth of melting pot.
In the short story, “Until Gwen” by Dennis Lehane, it starts off with the main character named Bobby who is getting picked up by his father from prison with a stolen Dodge Neon. His father wasn’t alone, he brought himself a company and it was a hooker named Mandy. We got a sense of who his father was, a “professional thief, a consummate con man” (647). We don’t know why he was in prison until the rest of the story slowly reveals the flashbacks he has with his girlfriend Gwen and the incident prior of going to jail. Bobby has no sense of who he is or where he is from because there no proof of record of him such as a birth certificate. After meeting Gwen, his life has changed and felt the sense of belonging into the world he is living in. Bobby’s
“People didn’t get the news of the party- the knowledge of it just slowly grew up in them” (167). This shows how, due to close proximity, everyone one know about the party by the time one person spills the secret. It is similar to how a rumor spreads quickly among students. The second party is a success. The whole community creates plans to celebrate Doc’s birthday. The planning starts after Mack tells Dora the whole story about the first party. In response, Dora suggests to “give [Doc] a party he does get to” (150). Dora pinpoints the Flophouse boys’ mistake of the first party. Previously, neither of them decide to plan the party while Doc is in the laboratory. Instead, they set up the party before Doc arrives, but it turns out to be a disaster. Hazel brings up the idea of having the next party during Doc’s birthday. After Mack discovers Doc’s birthdate, they consider the preparations without overdoing it. However, “people [did not] get the news of the party— the knowledge of it just slowly [grows] in them” (167). Mack and the boys did not directly tell the citizens about the party, but the plan spreads quickly. The citizens would know the boys’ intent of the party, unlike the previous one. The fact that the plan spread throughout Cannery Row reveals the close knit community. In response to the plan, Dora’s girls “[would work] on the [quilt] in the late mornings and in the afternoon before the boys from

Race is a prevalent concept in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel, A Princess of Mars. The two principal Martian races—Green and Red—are characterized by drastically different beliefs, abilities, and social organizations. Although differences in their ways of life can be misconstrued to suggest the presence of a racial hierarchy, Burroughs makes no specific delineations about one race being superior over another, thereby reinforcing the idea that the equally created races are simply divided by their respective cultures.

As the unit begins these third grade students will gather a working knowledge of the Food Guide Pyramid in Health Class. They will then learn to plan a healthy menu by referring to the food guide pyramid and local restaurant menus. The nutritional values of vegetables will be explored in Social Studies and Science as will the necessity of being able to read nutritional labels on food cartons. In the Media Center, the students will become familiar with Eric Carle and his story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book will become the motivation for original stories to be written in Integrated Language Arts. During Math class the students will create forms on which to gather data about their own eating habits. Using this data, the students will design and then analyze charts about the class’ and their individual eating habits. For a more in depth look at these activities and their objectives, please refer to the attached lesson plans.
Each daycare has their own menu for the children’s breakfast and lunch. Through my observations, I have noticed that the “Don’t Worry Childcare” has a variety of food options throughout the month. For example, the children could either choose from fruit loops cereal, or frosted flakes for breakfast. The snacks eaten varies every day as well. For instance, the children ate milk and cookies one day, and cheese crackers another day. An example of lunch would be, milk, chicken fingers, French fries, green beans, and mixed fruit one day, and spaghetti, corn, peaches, and bread and butter another day. I observed the children eat ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, and peaches one day for lunch. All those food options seemed very delicious. Each meal and snack give the children an option to what they would like to drink. For instance, the children can pick
The lesson is about knowing the concept of place value, and to familiarize first grade students with double digits. The students have a daily routine where they place a straw for each day of school in the one’s bin. After collecting ten straws, they bundle them up and move them to the tens bin. The teacher gives a lecture on place value modeling the daily routine. First, she asks a student her age (6), and adds it to another student’s age (7). Next, she asks a different student how they are going to add them. The students respond that they have to put them on the ten’s side. After, they move a bundle and place them on the ten’s side. When the teacher is done with the lesson, she has the students engage in four different centers, where they get to work in pairs. When the students done at least three of the independent centers, she has a class review. During the review she calls on different students and ask them about their findings, thus determining if the students were able to learn about place value.

Keep in mind, that this is a children’s party and children have short attention spans. The main purpose is for everyone to enjoy themselves. Make sure people are having fun; your party will surely be a success!
