The many differences associated between the epic poem, Beowulf and the movie are mainly focused on the modern ideas people share today. Many of the ideas that are in the Beowulf movie are more acclimated to fit modern lives today and how people are affected by these ideas. The ideas shared today compared to the ideas they shared in the time period of the poem have significantly changed. One of the main modern ideas today is that not everything people do is going to be perfect. In today's society people accept mistakes, they learn and strive off of them. People don’t judge each other off of one mistake. Making a few mistakes doesn't mean they are a bad person. In the movie, Beowulf is not completely noble, but that doesn't make him a terrible person. They make us think that he is only evil because he feels abandoned. They do this so that the audience feels more connected to the character. As in the poem the dragon is just evil and powerful. The authors do the same thing with Grendel. In the movie, he is in serious pain because he has an exposed ear drum. This makes us believe that he is only bad because he is in pain and his trouble dealing with it. As in the poem he is just a dark and evil demon. Another great example of the way they modernized the movie to fit our customs is by changing the character Wealtheow. In the poem she is the queen of the danes and the wife of Hrothgar. She is more of a peacekeeper and loyal to her husband. In the movie, she is a strong woman who is very resilient. She is more independent and stands up for herself. It shows how woman have changed over time and become more self reliant. Women have come from not having very many rights to having equal rights to men.
