Modern Day Slavery
“At least 27 million people across the globe are enslaved” (Sterbenz). Consequently, millions of people around the world are being used as property instead of free, human beings. This is a horrific piece of research that shows how today’s world is declining. When evaluating how slavery today is more abundant than any other time, one may notice that the different types of slavery, why it is happening, and how to get involved may affect the thinking of one’s perspective on slavery. There are many ways to begin the fight to completely ending slavery around the world. First, one has to raise awareness to acquire any support in confronting the issue of slavery. Social media is a great resource to have thousands or even millions of people learn about a problem. One simple tweet, post, snap, can become help for approximately 40 million slaves worldwide. Another way one can start to take action to bring awareness to modern-day slavery is boycotting. ¨For instance, chocolate is from slaves in West Africa, clothes come from Taiwan, charcoal from Brazil, so much of what we use is because of slaves. We just do not get involved enough to realize it¨ (Chumbow). Subsequently, a large amount of products one would use everyday is made by slaves. Boycotting is a solution that worked throughout history forcing companies to lose money and buy into to what the customers actually want. If one were to boycott certain products or major companies, those companies will have to cave in to the customers complaints. ¨End Slavery Now is a project of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and all financial donations are processed through the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
