Modern day segregation still exists in schools today across the United States and the entire world. You may think that it is about the race of children, when in fact it is not. This form of segregation exist in the exclusion of children with disabilities and special needs. In public schools these children are evaluated and placed in classrooms based on their medical conditions, disabilities, and special needs. This can play a large part in children’s ability to learn and can affect the amount of knowledge they gather throughout their life. Inclusion is an integral part of the community and allowing children with special needs the same experiences as typical children. In history children with disabilities had very few rights in the public education system. In the past these children were usually institutionalized. As laws were put in place, where children could attend schools with their peers, they were usually placed in separate classrooms and not included with their typical peers. According to the Educating all Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) also known as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) it legally requires all schools receiving federal funding to change the way they educate students with disabilities.1 Many times children are shipped outside of their community to attend special education school. They are usually placed in lower income areas where the school districts receive additional funding for each special needs student. Case workers will sway the decision to send them outside of their community in order to generate funds towards a lower income school. Resulting in children not being in full inclusion class room
