P.C.D vs Modern day Jail

Ways of prison can vary especially depending on the views of its society. As shown in the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, prison, or in this case Palace of Corrective Detention, is a very harsh place to be in, especially since the inmates face even more cruel conditions than in the ones in modern day jail. Some key differences between modern day jail and Corrective Detention include how they deal with acts of violence, levels of security, and jail conditions in general.

In our society, people would view the palace of corrective detention as cruel because of the way they choose to handle things. For instance violence is visually used. Equality stayed quiet about where he was and for that he was lashed (64). Also, he was punished by being thrown to the ground and tied to iron post while stripped from his clothing(64). Not to mention, security in corrective detention isn't stressed very much. There are no security guards, guardians, or anything of a such to make the prisoners feel secure(67). Although the cells had locks, they were very old and rusty(66). Another difference between modern day jail and corrective detention are the living conditions of its inmates. For instance, violence is not an option when it comes to punishment in modern day jail. Guards may ask questions, but they will never result to inflicting damage on any of the inmates. Also inmates, if asked questions, have the option to respond or to remain silent. Another major difference includes security and how serious it's considered. Guards are hired to take watch of cells at all times. Furthermore, surveillance cameras keep watch to alert any suspensions. Last, living conditions in modern day jail are better.
