Tuesdays with Morrie is an eye opening book by simply changing the way you think about your life and actions. It begins with Mitch Albom remembering his graduation from Brandeis University in the late 1979. While in college, Mitch took almost all of the classes Morrie offered. He was a small man who loved to dance. After graduation, Mitch promised a crying Morrie he would keep in touch; however, Mitch never kept that promise. Unfortunately, Morrie stopped dancing. He developed asthma and had trouble walking. When he stumbled down the stairs, he visited many doctors and found out he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He continued to teach, even though he knew that he had less than two years to live. Morrie wanted distinguish the difference between “dying” and “useless”. So one day, he called a bunch of his friends and established a date to have a “living funeral.” His friends would tell him things that they would usually say at a funeral. After college, Mitch experienced his first serious encounter with death. His favorite uncle who played an important part in Mitch’s life had died of pancreatic cancer at the age of forty-four. Even while writing this book report, tears spill out of my eyes. I remember when I first read the book, I got to the end of the chapter where Morrie and Koppel were having a follow up interview. Morrie was talking about the letters people sent to him and he was explaining what he wrote back. He spoke about how he wished there was a group, when he was a child, to talk about his sorrows as a young child. His interviewer, Koppel asked “that was seventy years ago your mother died. The pain still goes on?” I couldn’t imagine how it feels to lose a parent as a young child. I love my parents and just imagining not having them with me brings me to tears. Morrie was in tears just thinking about it. Even after 70 years, Morrie still was in pain and that really hurt
