Miss Maudie rocked back and forth next to me as we watched the deep orange fire crackle in her fireplace. The world was quiet; no birds chirping, no boys planning schemes, and no neighborhood gossips yapping about the latest news. The snow outside was like a blanket that hid us from all the bad things, and it felt like nothing bad could happen as long as we were in this wonderful winter world. As we sat near the fire wrapped in homemade blankets, we heard the sound of a car rolling into the driveway. My mind filled with curiosity as to who it could be, and then Miss Maudie turned to me with a smile on her face and said, “Miss Jean Louise, I have a surprise for you.” My heart raced with excitement. I cautiously did then mumbled “It’s Scout, and I’m doin’ just fine.” Miss Maudie realized that I was confused and told Charlie and me to go sit by the fire while she made us some hot cocoa. A few minutes later Miss Maudie came back with three steaming mugs of cocoa. As I drank mine I got a fuzzy feeling inside my stomach that reminded me of Christmas morning. Miss Maudie explained that Charlie was her daughter, and the reason that I’ve never seen her before is because she’s been working as a nurse in Montgomery since I was about four years old. Charlie was actually 21 years old and was dating a young man named Michael. Miss Maudie chatted with Charlie while I daydreamed of having a sister. After they finished talking Charlie asked me to tell her about myself. I wasn’t quite sure what she meant by this so all I said was “I’m seven years, four months, and sixteen days old. I got an older brother named Jem, our friend, Dill, is my husband, Atticus, my daddy, is a lawyer, and I ain’t got a momma.” I realized after I said this that Charlie had a shocked look on her face. “Wow!” She exclaimed, “Only seven years old, and you already married?” “Well yes, but it’s just pretend.
