Miss Maudie rocked back and forth next to me as we watched the deep orange fire crackle in her fireplace. The world was quiet; no birds chirping, no boys planning schemes, and no neighborhood gossips yapping about the latest news. The snow outside was like a blanket that hid us from all the bad things, and it felt like nothing bad could happen as long as we were in this wonderful winter world. As we sat near the fire wrapped in homemade blankets, we heard the sound of a car rolling into the driveway. My mind filled with curiosity as to who it could be, and then Miss Maudie turned to me with a smile on her face and said, “Miss Jean Louise, I have a surprise for you.” My heart raced with excitement. At that moment a lady burst through the door. …show more content…
I cautiously did then mumbled “It’s Scout, and I’m doin’ just fine.” Miss Maudie realized that I was confused and told Charlie and me to go sit by the fire while she made us some hot cocoa. A few minutes later Miss Maudie came back with three steaming mugs of cocoa. As I drank mine I got a fuzzy feeling inside my stomach that reminded me of Christmas morning. Miss Maudie explained that Charlie was her daughter, and the reason that I’ve never seen her before is because she’s been working as a nurse in Montgomery since I was about four years old. Charlie was actually 21 years old and was dating a young man named Michael. Miss Maudie chatted with Charlie while I daydreamed of having a sister. After they finished talking Charlie asked me to tell her about myself. I wasn’t quite sure what she meant by this so all I said was “I’m seven years, four months, and sixteen days old. I got an older brother named Jem, our friend, Dill, is my husband, Atticus, my daddy, is a lawyer, and I ain’t got a momma.” I realized after I said this that Charlie had a shocked look on her face. “Wow!” She exclaimed, “Only seven years old, and you already married?” “Well yes, but it’s just pretend. I’m not really in love with
She was our friend.” (Lee 59) This was how Scout described Miss Maudie, Scout was explaining her perspective of herself and that she wants to be treated like an adult and that the only one to do so was Miss Maudie. Consequently, this helps the reader understand Scout. Also, Miss Maudie helps to develop Jem’s character by giving him a big cake when he’s supposed to have a small one like Scout and Dill.
He is always available to give advice to his children, even if they made a major mistake, because he wants them to have discipline. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch shows this with his advice, his actions and his respect towards his children, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, and Jem Finch.
A rose who is not afraid to bear her thorns, Miss Maudie Atkinson from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is condemned by Maycomb County to a life of living on the outskirts. In this fast paced novel, Miss Maudie is a constant flow of sage wisdom and smart comments. This character even utters the novel’s root quote: “Your father’s right. Mockingbirds don’t do a thing but make music for us to enjoy” (119). While she is a minor character, Miss Maudie is a constant catalyst to the overall story.
One responsibility that I had to take on was very tough for me. I have a dog named Maggie Lou, that my mom and dad took care of. I didn't think it was very hard, but sadly, I was wrong. On one normal day my mom and dad said, “you have to take care of Maggie.” Then after I said “how hard could it be?”
“Thank you Mrs. Farrow, it means a lot to us.” Elizabeth cut her off, her smile fading slightly before she forced it to come back. “Please walk home safely, and if you feel a sudden urge to come back and grace us with your presence again please do so.” Mrs. Farrow nodded at her words and then turned silently and made her way down the path. She passed through Angela who barely noticed, all of her attention was on her mother.
Miss Maudie Atkinson’s (43) house was set ablaze on December 15th. The snow had just fallen for the first time since 1885. Maudie set a fire in the kitchen to warm up late Tuesday night when it caught the rest of the house. Around 1:00 am the commotion started and people were outside the burning home. The men of the neighborhood rushed to get Miss Maudie and her belongings out. No one was hurt thankfully, other than Mr. Avery, who was saving items from the upstairs when the stairs burned out and had to climb through the window where he then fell into Miss Maudie’s bushes. The bad news is the house is totally destroyed. There is no disappointment from Miss Maudie though, who is very optimistic and says “I’ve always wanted to build a smaller
A New Beginning The dreadful crimes, the gray sky. The powerless people and the fearful creatures. All this misery and tragedy ended when someone from far, far away came into our midst. A superhero who called herself Aqua. We had people frightened from far and wide praying and calling for someone who could protect them and their families.
Things went on as usual for the next two weeks. I had convinced Melinda to press charges on that son of a bitch for posting that video. Melinda gradually started to smile more often and we'd grown close to each other. We even started talking about maybe finding our own place, a small house maybe.
I have been patiently waiting for my first day of school and it's finally here. I walk through the doors and see all of the kids. All with their own incongruities. Some kids are big, some are small, some are clean, and some are dirty. I finally get to my classroom and my teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher, looks at me with a stern look. I could tell then I was excited to be in school for nothing, but I knew that when she found out how smart I am she'd like me. As class went on I found out that I was wrong.
When Charlie was younger, Aunt Helen used to take advantage of him and molest him. Charlie forgave Aunt Helen but he was very traumatized. He says, “Despite everything my mom and doctor and dad have said to me about blame, I can't stop thinking what I know. And I know that my Aunt Helen would still be alive today if she just bought me one present like everyone else. She would be alive if I was born on a day that didn't snow. I would do anything to make this go away. I miss her terribly. I have to stop writing now because I feel too sad.” (92) Charlie feels guilty about Aunt Helen’s death because she went to get him an extra present. No one else but Aunt Helen got him a second present for his birthday. Charlie thinks Aunt Helen is the best person ever because she was the only one that hugged him. He feels alone at the beginning of the story but he doesn’t stay away from his friends. Eventually he realizes that he has a
For The Cutiest Cutie I Ever Did See, We talk about it quite a lot, but I’m still quite surprised we’re where we are now. I don’t know what it was about you, but there was just something that really made me want you in my life. Of course back then it was more of a platonic thing, but I think I kind of knew deep down that you were someone special. Perhaps it was the way we kind of just clicked. We had (have) chemistry.
By the time I had begun liking you and Claire simultaneously, I forgot about Connor completely. You mostly locked yourself in the piano room in the morning and I was in the band room talking with others including Claire. I also was by Claire a lot when band was pretty much over, so our band period was free to do whatever. We got closer and I do believe she developed a crush on me, but I’m not positive because I’m not her. I can however think of two times when it seemed she tried to ask me out but it didn’t come out right or completely sound right where I caught it, and she didn’t persist so I assumed she was making a joke.
Almost all the women in my family were nurse, but my sisters and I can’t handle anything similar blood, we are squeamish. My sisters are a little better with dealing with blood, but one of them can’t do hospitals and is going to be a sports medicine trainer, while the other one can’t do anything with her own blood. Then there is me, that gets sick just thinking about the human body or blood.
