A Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare is a chilling play full of misfortune and comedy. Throughout the play, the themes of death and suffering are present, but yet the way in which they are presented is both comical and strange. The way in which the dialogue takes place or the way in which actions occur seem to be ambiguous. One of the most pivotal points of the story takes place over a very short time span, climaxing over three pages, and declining almost immediately thereafter. In this case, the death of Hermione and Mamillius occurs and is resolved, with their burial following quickly after. The wording throughout the text can be interpreted in several ways, especially in the way which death is represented throughout the play. Death occurs quickly and there is no real indication to when it is about to take place. The characters die off stage, and as an audience we only hear of their deaths from second hand accounts. Is it thus possible to believe all that is said or heard, or is possible that the sounds and sights of the play are written as such to cause doubt? Shakespeare uses death in A Winter’s Tale as a modem for certain events to be interpreted ambiguously, ultimately leading up to the reveal at the end. The way in which death is presented is as a way for the story to proceed, and it allows for the character to mold to the situation. Leontes has become a deranged king, one whom can no longer separate his feelings from his actions. As the novel progresses, Leontes becomes more and more rash, basing his actions only off his feelings, and it does not matter what is said to him. A prime example of this, is his reaction to the Oracle, as he disbelieves what he is told: “Hermione is chaste; Polixenes blameless; Camillo a true s... ... middle of paper ... ...llowers he had. Leontes has once again caused the demise of someone else close to him, all due to his own rage. Death is perceived as an action that occurs, and cannot be reversed. Antigonus has died, and that is the end of it, the daughter is now forever gone, and Leontes will not gain peace till the lost is found. As the reader, one is lead to believe that everything being said it true, but in this play there are moments, where one must ask if we can believe what has just occurred. Death is a subjects that is normally certain, and when it occurs, as a reader one is to believe that it has occurred, until evidence shows otherwise. In the case of the death of Hermione, the absence of an on stage deaths is peculiar. Why is it that Hermione’s death could not be presented to the audience? Paulia appears to have been hiding something from both the audience and Leontes.
In the Antigone, unlike the Oedipus Tyrannus, paradoxically, the hero who is left in agony at the end of the play is not the title role. Instead King Creon, the newly appointed and tyrannical ruler, is left all alone in his empty palace with his wife's corpse in his hands, having just seen the suicide of his son. However, despite this pitiable fate for the character, his actions and behavior earlier in the play leave the final scene evoking more satisfaction than pity at his torment. The way the martyr Antigone went against the King and the city of Thebes was not entirely honorable or without ulterior motives of fulfilling pious concerns but it is difficult to lose sight of the fact that this passionate and pious young woman was condemned to living imprisonment.

In plotting to fake her death, she is too hasty in trying to condense the timeline of the play, and thus the impatience of the young lovers is perhaps more of a guiding force towards ruin than any ‘star’ (Prologue 6) set against them. In the first half of A Winter’s Tale, Leontes follows this pattern of tragic characters trying to speed up events. For example, he ‘hurrie[s]’ (3.2.102-3) a judgment against Hermione and so she gives birth ‘before her time’ (2.2.24). However, the second half of the play turns to a more pastoral, natural medium of time that is ultimately restorative. Time even appears as a character half way through, declaring that he ‘makes and unfolds error’ (4.1.1-2). The unfolding of error, in this play, takes sixteen years – notably longer than Much Ado About Nothing where Hero and Claudio are reconciled in two days. However, the “error” in A Winter’s Tale is notably more grievous – although Hermione will eventually return, Maximillus and Antigonus are still dead because of Leontes. Additionally, the span of sixteen years tempers Leontes as he learns moderation; during the resurrection scene he declares the statue ‘warm!’
Antigone risks her own life to bury her brother, therefore, she goes against Kreon’s edict that Polyneices should be left unburied; she believes Polyneices deserves to reach the afterlife. Antigone tells Ismene, “I will bury him myself. If I die for doing that, good: I will stay with him, my brother; and my crime will be devotion” (Sophocles 23). Antigone is willing to risk her own life by disobeying the king’s authority; She stands up for her religious belief that Polyneices should be buried. Kreon tells Antigone before she takes her own life, “I won’t encourage you. You’ve been condemned” (Sophocles 57). Kreon believes that Antigone’s crime is severe, and righteousness should be used to justify her crime. At this point of the play, Antigone realizes she will be put to death, but she does not regret her act of loyalty. In Antigone’s last speech before she takes her own life, she exclaims, “Land of Thebes, city of my fathers… see what I suffer at my mother’s brother’s hand for an act of loyalty and devotion” (Sophocles 57). Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night revolves around a love triangle that continually makes twists and turns like a rollercoaster, throwing emotions here and there. The characters love each another, but the common love is absent throughout the play. Then, another character enters the scene and not only confuses everyone, bringing with him chaos that presents many different themes throughout the play. Along, with the emotional turmoil, each character has their own issues and difficulties that they must take care of, but that also affect other characters at same time. Richard Henze refers to the play as a “vindication of romance, a depreciation of romance…a ‘subtle portrayal of the psychology of love,’ a play about ‘unrequital in love’…a moral comedy about the surfeiting of the appetite…” (Henze 4) On the other hand, L. G. Salingar questions all of the remarks about Twelfth Night, asking if the remarks about the play are actually true. Shakespeare touches on the theme of love, but emphases the pain and suffering it causes a person, showing a dark and dismal side to a usually happy thought.
One of William Shakespeare’s best remembered plays for its comical and ironic tone is A Midnight’s Summer Dream. There were characters designed to be humorous and that alone. Puck and Bottom behave very much alike, and have similar roles for different people. Both Puck and Bottom are comic relief characters in one way or the other. Both of them are needed for the play, because Puck’s spirits controls the whole story, which sets the tone for it, and Bottoms comic relief for the audience and play.
The dilemma of identifying the true hero, or heroine, of Sophocles’ Antigone has tortured students for years. It is indeed a difficult decision to make. The basis for this decision is what the reader perceives to be Sophocles’ dramatic issue in this play. The dramatic issue of the play is twofold: Antigone is a fanatic who is driven by her religious fever to bury the body of her criminal brother, Polyneices, against the edict of Creon. In the second part, Sophocles shows how the new King Creon’s refusal to change his decision in the face of adversity is admirable, but at the same time his political morals end up destroying his family. His fall from grace is tragic, whereas Antigone's fall is welcome. In this manner, Sophocles sympathizes with Creon, and thus he becomes the hero of the Antigone.

His father was killed by Hamlet and his sister was driven insane due to the series of events that took place because of Hamlet. Like Hamlet, Laertes wants to avenge his father by killing the man who killed Polonius.
Hamlet is one of the most often-performed and studied plays in the English language. Hamlet is a man caught in a moral dilemma, and his inability to reach a resolution condemns himself and nearly everyone close to him.
