She was a slave of a Dutch family, the Hardenberghs, but once her owner died, she was sold at an auction for the first time to a Englishman, John Neely. As a little girl, I remember learning about Ruby Bridges. I remember being mesmerized; truly astonished by the amount of courage and strength that she showed when she persevered during times of racial discrimination, all at the age of six. During, that time America was in an era of flash points; the racial revolution of the 1960’s was televised. The image of Ruby walking up the front steps of William Frantz Elementary School sparked an interest in a famous painter Norman Rockwell, who created a blueprint that later evolved into the everlasting interpretation of that historical event for generations to come.
Ela Stein is one of the most famous speakers who talks about her time during the Holocaust. Ela Stein was eleven years old in February of 1942 when she was sent to Terezin concentration camp with other Czech Jews(Rubin, Flap). Ela was transported with her mother, sister, grandmother, and her Uncle Otto. Once they got to Terezin a guard ordered them to get off the train, and they had to walk the last couple miles. It started at a young age; she would do what typical girls do. She would secretly spy on him whenever she got the chance, or try to snatch his attention by any means necessary. It was her first crush she had and she would do anything to get he’s attention. When a man came to town wanting pictures of Native Americans in garments worn years and years ago by the wrong tribe. She volunteered to be in one of the pictures dressed as a Native American not for the money that was being handed out, she did it so she could get Toby’s attention so he would notice her. “But all she could think of was Toby’s eyes on her naked shoulder” (Silver, 2013, pg.47). At one point she showed a little bit of skin on her shoulder to draw his attention even more. Unfortunately for her, she was unable to grab his attention. This however, wasn’t her only way of seeing him or trying to snatch his gaze. She also worked at his father’s house as servant to his stepmother. Every time she had a chance she got she tried to sneak a peak of him no matter where he was at. This relationship seemed more of a young girl’s fantasy. Similar to a high schooler going after her crush no matter who it maybe. This relationship, never the less, was an immature phase between the two of them. It seems like it’s between the point of a crush and moving into a legitimate

Brennan supported the Progressive belief that civilization must seek to advance society as a whole not on an individual basis. Brennan’s philosophy on the nature of government mirrored that of Progressives like Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt. Wilson highlighted the evolutionary necessity of the government to adapt in his New Freedom Speech, “The old political formulas do not fit the present problems; they read now like documents taken out of a forgotten age” The government established by the Constitution provided a basic framework for government; however, as the nation continued to evolve, so must our interpretation of that historic document. For Brennan “The genius of the Constitution rests not in any static meaning it might have had in a world that is dead and gone, but in the adaptability of its great principles to cope with current problems and current needs.” Brennan believed that the ultimate purpose of the Constitution was to protect the human dignity of all citizens.

Renowned British actress and activist for the feminist movement, Emma Watson, in her speech to the United Nations, “HeForShe,” argues that gender discrimination is a plague to human civilization. Watson’s purpose is to sway the audience that gender inequality has to come to an end, with the support of men and women as advocates for egalitarianism. Additionally, she enlightens the audience that the problem originated from political affairs, the economy, and social disparity. Watson creates a compassionate tone in order to convey men, specifically those who negatively perceived feminism or did not think that feminist issues affected them. Nevertheless, Watson’s speech is ineffectively persuasive due to the poor description she formulated
