Brenda Tracy, a sexual assault survivor has dedicated her life to helping people through her work as a nurse and activist, she travels to different universities to speak to college athletes, specifically male athletes about the prevention of sexual assault. Tracy most recently spoke at Weber State University during the fourth annual Allen Holmes Diversity Symposium, named after former Weber State athlete Allen Holmes, a major contributor to helping the student body diminish prejudicial and bigoted beliefs. The symposium deals with topics such as diversity and unity and in recent years has worked to prevent sexual assault and invited Tracy to speak at this year’s symposium to address sexual assault and prevention amongst male student-athletes. Tracy uses her experience and activism to help persuade student-athletes and the general student population to make a difference by standing up to sexual assault through various methods, such as working to prevent it and reporting it when needed. The speech given by Tracy was very appropriate to both the audience and situation. Sexual assault on college campuses, specifically sexual assault committed by student-athletes has been an increasing issue in recent years. The reason Tracy chooses to address male athletes is that she was sexually assaulted by college football players and there is very little punishment through the school for athletes who have sexually assaulted someone. Tracy attacks this issue head-on by visiting colleges and addressing mainly male athletes about the impact of sexual assault and ways they can help prevent it. She is also a part of the NCAA Commission to Combat Sexual Violence and uses her experience as a member as well as her experience of being a sexual assault survivor to effectively address the issue of sexual assault to her audience.
