In today’s society military, police, and firefighters can use robotic technology to keep humans out of harm’s way and to assist them with their work. In many ways robots can help first responders and our military keep themselves and their communities safe from harm.
With new robotic technology being created this is helping firefighters, law enforcement, and the military save the lives of others and helping others but not putting themselves in harms way as they used to do. With robots there are many robots for many situations like drones for searching and surveillance to giant search and seizure robots that can be used in mass casualty situations. humans like tight and dark spaces that are common, the robots are a perfect fit for the task (Soffar, 2017). Robots do not get tired, they do not need to sleep and they have no fear. These robots do not experience hunger or get tired they have no emotions like humans so this gives us an advantage. (Soffar, 2017) Firefighters go through a lot to save the lives of those in their community, with this they risk their own lives to save the lives of others. With animatronics firefighters can save many lives and keep themselves safe. The use of robotics in firefighting is being increasingly studied due to firefighters routinely being exposed to dangerous conditions. There are a variety of systems that are being developed to support firefighters due to a wide range of fire events including fires involving structures, vehicles, aircrafts, ships, and wildlands. With these scenarios a wide range of robotics would have to be created to support firefighters for operations including sizing up fire, identifying trapped people, locating the fire, and fire suppression (Lattimer, n.d.). With the 2 general types of robotics that have been firefighting, fixed and mobile systems, these can help to keep humans safe in dangerous situations. These Autonomous robotics can carry laser-range, radio signal, and ultraviolet sensors to assist in search and rescue missions. With these being able to work independently and provide overview of fireground and human rescue workers to make sure everyone stays safe (Fire and Rescue, 2010). Within Law enforcement robotics are becoming more common than ever. Law enforcement robotics are stated to increase in value to cities and local communities providing low cost protection and high value capabilities (Measure, 2016). There are many scenarios where police or civilians are wounded by the “bad guys” but can’t be removed due to an ongoing exchange of fire. The SAR robot can go in an make the rescue to save to wounded and not cause another person shot due to running into the fire fight (Calderone, 2013). The aim of using law enforcement robots is too secure the officers in the field. Robotics make police forces more functional, robotics improve performance by working remotely. Police bomb squads also need AI technology, more flexibility and better maneuverability (Measure, 2016). Military AI can do most dangerous tasks instead of soldiers. If there were something wrong, we would only lose the money of the robot instead of losing the soldiers life. These tele-operated machines are used for surveillance, sniper detection, and to neutralize explosive devices. They can endure the damage done by the bombs or other types of weaponry that would destroy the human body. The job of these robots are to assist the soldier, help make life easier, and save humans from danger (Soffar, 2017). Weaponized robots lack the ugly aggression exhibited by some human soldiers and will become more accurate at detecting threats, completing work to “dirty, dull, or dangerous” for humans. The US military is already using unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct surveillance and drop missiles on suspected terrorists overseas in places like Pakistan and Yemen. Also American forces relied on bomb-squad robots to inspect and defuse possible explosive devices during military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan to keep humans away from the bomb to keep them out of harm’s way (Opher, 2017).
