There were many important historical events and reforms happening in the world between 1910 and 1945. Of these many life changing occurrences there are three that are particularly significant over many others. These events include the First World War, the Great Depression, as well as the murder of around six million Jewish people in the Holocaust. Throughout these events the beliefs of militarism and nationalism can be seen clearly in most of them. Each of these incidents led to adaptations of the circumstances in many types of literature. Four factors that were constantly seen in the global war, that lasted from 1914 to 1918 included, militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. The reason militarism was one cause of World War One was because at the time most nations were using their connections to make their military the strongest in the world. This ideology is one that would eventually cause discontent between other nations which would end in a contest of military power. Secondly, the ideas of alliances were important because nations would ally with others which would pull those allied nations into personal affairs. Thirdly, the idea of imperialism is one that will stay in the world for long as humans are alive. This is because nations were competing with other world powers to see who could gain the most territory and gain the materials found throughout the land. Lastly, the final major factor that caused the First World War was nationalism. One is called “Pantoum of the Great Depression” by Donald Justice and “I Cannot Forget” by Kyla Marshell. The poem “Pantoum of the Great Depression” used a grim tone, an example is the fact that the speaker states twice “and if we suffered we kept quiet about it” (Lines 19 and 22). This poem is directly based on The Great Depression. It also includes a speaker that seems to know what it was like to live through it and is talking to someone in a similar setting which is seen when the speaker states “But we did not ourselves know what the end was. People like us simply go on” (Lines 43-45). The final historical poem is based on the events of the Holocaust that happened during World War Two. Kyla Marshell was the author of the poem but the speaker was a Holocaust survivor named Alexander Kimel. In the last six lines of the poem the speaker is able to explain his
