Lieutenant Commander Mike Dahlgreen dies while ordering the crew on the captured U-boat. Dahlgree placed Lieutenant Andrew Tyler in charge and his role changed to being a leader for his crew. Tyler was unfamiliar of the role of a leader and lacked certainty, but in a conversation with the Chief he realized his deficiency in his role as a leader. The Chief told him that he can not tell his crew “I don’t know” because it would damage the moral of his crew and possible lead to their death. He preceded to to punch on of his crew, because he went again Tyler’s order to cease fire. He concluded by stating that his crew want in a democracy. He asserted his power as their leader. The U-571 came into attack by a destroyer and Tyler was force to repose.
Richard Russell was a steadfast individual who believed that the United States should not support, or even attempt to enter into any kind of conflict without direct provocation or dire need of American intervention. This mindset played a major role in influencing his decisions on foreign policy issues such as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, and the Vietnam War. Since there was what seemed to him a lack of antagonization on the part of the Vietnamese towards the United States, he believed that it would be a waste of money, time, and American lives to enter into a conflict that would bring no benefits to the United States. The prophet’s motive is revealed to be his mother who has influenced him into thinking the Georgia Flu was God’s doing. The following is dialogue between Clark and Elizabeth. “Clark: I think he’s maybe picked up some strange ideas about what happened Elizabeth: What kind of strange ideas? Clark: He thinks the pandemic happened for a reason… Elizabeth: Everything happens for a reason, its not for us to know.” (Pg. 260-261) This excerpt reveals the seed planted by Tyler’s mother, Elizabeth, which will later turn Tyler into the prophet. Keeping the Union soldiers safe through the night gave Carter Druce the privilege to sleep throughout the day. Carter woke up around 3 o’clock in the morning with chills running down his spine. Carter decided to go on a walk to reflect on what he has just done. Using the moonlight to guide him through the helpless camp, Carter’s emotion finally overtake him. As the salty tears ran down his face and touched his tongue, he realized pulling the trigger on his father was a grave mistake. It was at this moment that he decided leave the infantry and hold the Union leadership responsible for his father's death.
He pushes himself through the brutal training and accepted his place as one of the least respected members of the group. Agu starts to look up to the Commandant as a hero and develops a personal relationship with him, only to get taken advantage of and raped. Towards the end of the movie, the battalion suffers heavy losses. They are running from NRG, the United Nations, as well as the government. They have no food or ammunition, which causes a lot of conflict with the group. The secondary tension (Josselyn, Mod. 4) that develops forces the group, including Agu, to abandon the Commandant and surrender to enemy forced to ensure their new goal of survival. Agu went through many hardships and made many difficult decisions, but in the end he survived. Many qualities are in force to make a great leader. Captain Nemo has all of these. His well developed mind allowed him to not only deal with the technological details of the submersible, but also to deal with those around him in an advantageous way. The smooth running of any business is enhanced by attention to the smallest details. Nemo had a great capacity for the minutia of both his life and his work. A successful business depends on the respect a leader gains from his workers. When the captain showed respect he received respect in return. The three prisoners could consider themselves fortunate to be in the hands of such a leader.
