6. BODY:
1. HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE: Iwo Jima was Japanese home soil only 650 miles from Tokyo. No foreign army in Japan's 5000 year history had fought on Japanese soil. To the US, Iwo Jima was important because of its location, midway between Japan and American bomber bases in the Marianas. Iwo Jima with its three airfields was an ideal location for fighter-escort stations and as a safe haven for damaged bombers.
TRANSITION: There are six men that standout from the rest, these men are known as the Flag Raisers.
1. THE FLAG RAISING: Mount Suribachi is a 550 foot volcanic cone at the island’s southern tip. It dominates both possible-landing beaches, from this point Japanese gunners have every inch of the beaches covered. Every marine on the island was in range of Japanese guns.
2. THE FLAG RAISERS: There were six flag raisers from the 28th Regiment, 5th Division.
a. Sgt. Mike Strank was the Marine who led the other five safely to the top of Mount Suribachi. He also gave the order to find a pole and attach the flag and “put’er up!” Sgt. Strank died on March 1, 1945.
b. Cpl. Harlon Block was Sgt. Strank’s second in command. He took over the leadership of his unit when Sgt. Strank was killed. Cpl. Block also died on March 1, 1945.
Giving way to the parties and the fun associated with college kids, Caputo failed out of college and realized what he really wanted to be was a Marine. He joined the Marines and went through a lot of officer training until he eventually reached what would be known as his final rank of Lieutenant. Introduced to the Vietnam War in 1965 as a Platoon leader, Caputo walked into the war a little scared but with a lot of determination. Caputo started the war with a lot of field work including jungle expeditions and shooting escapades, and eventually was sent to keep track of the everyday deaths occurring during the war and all the paperwork associated with such a job. Later he was put back in charge of a platoon which eventually lead to his downfall following an unethical order he gave his men that resulted in the killing of a couple Vietnamese pedestrians believed to be part of the Viet Cong.
Gailey, Harry. The War in the Pacific: From Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay. Novato: Presidio, 1995.

Initially, Japanese strategists assumed that the tiny island would be overwhelmed in a matter of hours. However, they underestimated the fighting spirit of the military personnel and civilians stationed on the island. For sixteen days these brave men fought against overwhelming odds, but demonstrated both to the Japanese and to their fellow Americans back at home that the Americans could and would put up a courageous fight.
This battle was the start of America taking control of the war over the Pacific. This battle took place six months after Japan first struck Pearl Harbor. Many historians say this was the greatest air battle of all time. America not only proved that numbers didn’t matter, but showed that only leaders with clear eyes and soldiers with heart can win a battle of any size. Even before the battle started, America saw his attack coming.
Along this delineated path, the exhibit seems to be broken down into five main "subthemes": the Japanese migration to the U.S., the incarceration process, life inside the detention camps, U.S. military involvement by the Japanese-Americans, and repairing the Constitution. By traveling through the exhibit in this order, the visitor gets a feel for the basic chronology of the events and perhaps how one event led into the other.
The novel Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley is a book written to inform and entertain the audience with a story about the picture of the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima, also known as Sulfur Island. It is written from the point of view of the son of John Henry “Doc” Bradley, one of the flag raisers. In this novel James Bradley attempts to explain his father’s and his father’s friends’ lives and acknowledge their bravery as Marines. As John “Doc” Bradley said, “The real heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who didn’t come back” (Bradley 7).
The journal is the first imperative symbol in this story. It is her only escape from all the bad and negatives that her life has become. She has trouble communicating her thoughts and ideas to John because he always rejects her ideas but her journal is her own safe storage unit for her true feeling against John and her ‘sickness’. The journal is a safe place for her and she feels she can express herself without any consequences as she says, “I don't feel able. And I know John would think it absurd. But I MUST say what I feel and think in some way--it is such a relief”(Gilman
After smoking, or consuming marijuana, it is distributed in the brain. The concentration of marijuana in the brain may be governed by an active transport process in the choroid plexus network of blood vessels in the brain which regulates intraventricular pressure by absorption and secretion of cerebro spinal fluid. one scientific experiment it gave an example of how the distribution of marijuana in the central nervous system could effect man. At a high dose of 30 mg./kg. marked sedation and pronounced motor incoordination peaked at the one hour interval subsiding in 8 hours when over reaction occurred to external stimuli; man reveals incapacitation of cognitive and motor function. High concentrations of marijuana are usually found in the following parts of the brain: the frontal cortex (the general association area), and hippocampus (short term memory and oreintation). As a result, perception of time, mood and general cordination is impaired. It is apparent that marijuana intoxication effects the neurological functions and usually disappears in 24 hours, but can become a permanent malfunction.THC effec...
Marijuana while illegal on a federal level has been legalized in 18 states and the District of Columbia for medical use and also for personal use for anyone over 21 in Washington and Colorado. 48% of Americans admit to using marijuana according to a 2013 survey conducted by Scientific America. With the change in public opinion concerning marijuana the need to understand the effect and consequences associated with its use are vitally important. What are the effects on the brain and the rest of the body? Does it matter when you start using marijuana? Also what is the effect marijuana use has on a person’s life, to include school, work, family and friends.
The debate concerning recreational and medical use of cannabis has historically been incredibly controversial and its popularity is increasing. Many claim that there are no downsides to its use, often falling back on the “alcohol is worse for you” argument, while those who oppose its use say otherwise. In 2013, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) surveyed 70,000 Americans 12 years and older and found that 7.3% of Americans regularly used marijuana in 2012, showing a rise in use over the last several years. While cannabis is still considered an illegal substance in the majority of the country, several states are beginning to shift their views, allowing for the use of medical marijuana in some and even full legal recreational use in others, such as Colorado. The main question driving this debate is how does cannabis affect the mind? Legalization very much depends on peoples’ health and safety concerns, and so in this paper I discuss cannabis and its effects on cognitive function both short- and long-term.
The impending paragraphs will discuss how marijuana users are affected while intoxicated. Some of the areas that will be covered include how marijuana affects the users long-term and short-term memory, as well how marijuana has the ability to construct false memories. The paragraphs will also discuss how the human body changes as a whole, how users perceive themselves at any particular time, the way in which individual senses increase with the use of marijuana, and finally the psychological affects that may differ from user to user depending on their current emotional state.
The battle of Okinawa was a killer battle that forever contributed to the defeat of the Axis nations. The attack on Okinawa had taken a heavy toll on both sides. The Americans lost 7,373 men killed and 32,056 wounded on land. At sea, the Americans lost 5,000 killed and 4,600 wounded. The Japanese lost 107,000 killed and 7,400 men taken prisoner. It is possible that the Japanese lost another 20,000 dead as a result of American tactics whereby Japanese troops were incinerated where they fought. This battle contributed majorily to the defeat of the Axis nations.
Growing up in Amboy, Illinois I quickly learned that the place to be on a friday night is the football field; family is all that matters, and friends are considered family. Many people have no idea that Amboy even exists, so I usually say I’m about an hour or so away from Rockford or Chicago. Everyone knows everyone in Amboy, and two best friends are most likely related somewhere down the line. High school football is a way of life in a small town and in 5th grade I was at the game sitting in the Jr. High bleachers; now I am a senior sitting in the high school student section for the last time, and twenty years down the road I will be sitting in the bleachers watching my children play. I know that I’ll always have people here for me in this
Did you know that the Battle of Midway was a crucial turning point in the Pacific Theater? Midway was just a 2.4 square mile island, but it was deemed the second most important island for defending the U.S west coast. The U.S quickly built the Naval Air Station Midway, erecting guns emplacements and airstrips on the tiny island.
