Topic A: Migration and Human Rights. Ecuador is home to an estimated of 50,000 refugees, most of which are Colombians who wanted to escape their violent conflict in their country. Many refugees say that they are comfortable in Ecuador, yet they face discrimination due to the integration of foreigners. Local and national media often emphasize the stereotype of Colombians as drug traffickers and criminals. Even school teachers treat Colombian school children as second grade citizens. Colombian refugees are always looked upon as illicit people and are marginalized by society. The downfall of oil prices during the early 1980s followed by the financial decline in the 1990s prove to be the causative reason for the migration of Ecuadorians from rural areas to the city and in addition of the emigration to other countries like Spain or US. Greater parts of those who decide to migrate to the cities are the ones who are currently unemployed, seeking for an opportunity to find a job to support their families. Those who are incapable of achieving higher edification opt to become economic migrants. The precariousness of children, the strain between migrants and locals, worker abuse, economic problems, loss in cultural views are few of the many pessimistic effects due to the migration of residents in Ecuador. President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa passed a new Communications Law to control the information given out to public by the press and media. This law limits and restricts the press from their liberty of publishing all the news material they can. The public is accusing the members of the press of not publishing everything that is necessary. Public protesters against the government are countered by prosecutors who widely use counterterrorism ... ... middle of paper ... ...a modern and welcoming country that offers new and diverse opportunities for domestic and international investors within a peaceful territory. Logistical infrastructure including first class airports and developed digital computer activity with triple the number of internet users, Ecuador has developed remarkably. In recent years, Ecuador has invested in several renewable energy projects including strategic projects in mining and oil with the utmost respect to the environment through responsible extraction. Between 2007 and 2010, an efficient public health system was established and the national government increased their investment in health by 129% in comparison to the 2003-2006 periods. A significant increase in the state budget dedicated to research and development demonstrates a long standing commitment of the national government towards science and technology.
