Microaggressions is a biased form of language tone, looks, gestures, and regular conversations with the intent of belittling or creating a gap with another person since they are different from the norm. For example, a fair-skinned, full bearded man wearing a long, white headscarf walking into a department store. However, the storekeeper asks that man to leave because, he is making the other shoppers feel uncomfortable. So, this scenario is a demonstration of a microaggressions. Furthermore, this type of bias is not equal to that of discrimination of skin color or individual racism, on the contrary, he has been asked to leave the store because of his headscarf which is a part of him and his belief. Yet, the storekeeper will never know it due to his microaggressions. I experienced microaggressions in high school, when the White school counselor walked into my homeroom class and asked to speak to me by pointing directly at me and signaling to walk toward her.
Then, we stepped out of the room into the hallway where she began to say, “I know about your problem and I will help you with it.” I was shocked because I did not realize that I had a problem. She continued with, “Just tell me when the baby is due and I’ll make sure to retrieve your homework assignments so, that you don’t fall behind.” Again, I was thrown back by what she had just said. In a slow-motion type of way, I answered her with, “I am not pregnant. I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She proceeded with, “Your name is Erica M., right?” “Well, yes. That is my name but, I am not pregnant,” I said. She glanced over her paperwork and realized the name of the girl who was pregnant was that of a Hispanic girl whose name was Erica M. but, her last name was a Hispanic last name and my last name was that of Anglo decent because, I was adopted. Then, I said to her, “You have the last names wrong. My last name is not Mireles.” “Oh well, you fit the picture,” she said and walked away. In the end, this scenario reflects the perception of Whites in the psychological dilemma
description. The acculturation of taking on the cultural ways of another group in order to fit in is the most realistic to me. For instance, the clothing displayed in window shops attracts patrons who want to be trendy with fashion and style. Furthermore, this applies to vehicles, restaurants, neighborhoods, and even indoor pets. Ultimately, the latest trend is appealing to different cultures since, most people want to fit in. The video, When Your Parents Speak Broken English, hit home because, I was that kid and still, to this day my mother relies on me for everything. I would become upset because sometimes my White elementary teachers would not understand why my mother could not communicate with them, so they would brush us off at open house. The other video that has helped me understand my biases is the What Does My Headscarf Mean to You? As I was walking my children into school, on the first day of school, I noticed a woman wearing a headscarf just like Ms. Abdel-Magdied. I turned toward my children and thought, “I hope she is not their teacher,” what awful thing to say but I said it unconsciously. In conclusion, I hope to refrain from microaggressions or biases in the future.
After reading Alsultany’s “Los Intersticios: Recasting Moving Selves,” I realized that there are many misconceptions among those who have single or mixed racial background. For individuals who have more than one races, it may seem that they are at an advantage since they have luxury to take side with which ever race they choose. However, it actually results in a constant aggravation when one is constantly questioned about their race. Alsultany was asked by her classmate about her racial background. In “Like Mexican” when Gary announced he fell in love with a Japanese girl his family did not immediately accept the good news Gary thought it to be. Gary’s grandmother wanted him to marry an “Okie” (People different from his own culture.) The false assumption from Gary’s family led to disbelief and hesitation, but Gary realizes that one defined by their race and ethnicity does not determine who you are and your financial situation (Soto 280). The backlash that Sotomayor experiences because of her decision to apply to and her acceptance into Princeton reveals how most Puerto Ricans experienced forms of racialization, or racial classification, by Caucasian Americans. Sotomayor experiences the culmination of years of racial discrimination and oppression when her school nurse asks with an “accusatory tone” and a “baleful gaze” how she got a “likely” and the “two top-ranking girls in the school only got a ‘possible’” (Sotomayor 102). She expects Sotomayor to experience “shame” under her gaze because her “perplexed discomfort” in answering her question is “clearly not enough” (102). The idea of racism has evolved and has become less prevalent throughout the last century. Schools and public areas are unsegregated, voting rights, racial slurs being considered as unacceptable behavior etc. American sociologist and race theorist, Howard Winant states that’s “The ensuing approaches increased recognition of racial injustice and inequality, but did not overcome the discriminatory processes” (Winant,2000)Although the United states has come a long way to try to end racism, one cannot ignore the fact that it still exists. It is something that may seem invisible in society, but everybody knows that it still thrives and that it’s racial attitudes affect the way our society functions. One of these invisible forms of racism is called microagression. Microagression is the theory that certain interactions between different races can be interpreted as small acts of verbal aggression. Racial micro aggression has caused many behavior and identity problems between races in today’s society. In the article, "Microagressions in everyday life", Dr. Derald Wing Sue states that “Microaggressions are similar to carbon monoxide - “invisible, but potentially lethal” - continuous exposure to these type of interactions “can be a sort of death by a thousand cuts to the victim” It is a common experience that many people of different racial groups deal within their every day lives. They are harmful to society, creating a hostile environment, dividing people apart, creating inequalities, and decreasing productivity in the work and school environment.
Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
Microaggressions are committed constantly, among numerous people without them realizing it. I must say I am completely guilty of also playing part in this act. These acts are done constantly and no one understands the affects it has on people. Miller and Garran (2008) states, “Racial microaggressions are similar to aversive racism. They are “subtle, stunning, often automatic,” verbal and nonverbal putdowns and social assaults that wound people of color unbeknownst to the perpetrator” (p.97). This is what produces pain and anger inside countless of people. Many individuals need professional help in order to surpass the neglect they have been summited to.
Although our society is slowly developing a more accepting attitude toward differences, several minority groups continue to suffer from cultural oppression. In her essay “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Gloria Anzaldúa explores the challenges encountered by these groups. She especially focuses on her people, the Chicanos, and describes the difficulties she faced because of her cultural background. She argues that for many years, the dominant American culture has silenced their language. By forcing them to speak English and attempting to get rid of their accents, the Americans have robbed the Chicanos of their identity. From an early age it was clear to Sandy that, the lighter a person’s skin was, the higher their social status. As the only young child in his household, he was exposed to many conversations among the adults around him that revolved around race. A primary example of this was one of the conversations between his grandmother, Aunt Hager, and her friend, Sister Whiteside. Sandy and the two elder women sat at the kitchen table together to share a meal while the two women chatted. Sandy sat quietly and absorbed their talk of everything from assuming the white ancestry of a lighter-skinned child they knew, to the difficulty of keeping “colored chillens in school” (13-15).
I was late for school, and my father had to walk me in to class so that my teacher would know the reason for my tardiness. My dad opened the door to my classroom, and there was a hush of silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on my father and me. He told the teacher why I was late, gave me a kiss goodbye and left for work. As I sat down at my seat, all of my so-called friends called me names and teased me. The students teased me not because I was late, but because my father was black. They were too young to understand. All of this time, they thought that I was white, because I had fare skin like them, therefore I had to be white. Growing up having a white mother and a black father was tough. To some people, being black and white is a contradiction in itself. People thought that I had to be one or the other, but not both. I thought that I was fine the way I was. But like myself, Shelby Steele was stuck in between two opposite forces of his double bind. He was black and middle class, both having significant roles in his life. "Race, he insisted, blurred class distinctions among blacks. If you were black, you were just black and that was that" (Steele 211).
