By 1503 he was back in Florence, where he was commissioned to execute the fresco of the battle of Anghiari. This work, like its companion piece assigned to Michelangelo, was never completed, and the cartoons were subsequently destroyed. The work exerted enormous influence on later artists, however, and some impression of the original may be had from anonymous copies in the Uffizi and Casa Horne, from an engraving of 1558 of Lorenzo Zacchia, and from a drawing by Rubens. From about this time dates the celebrated Mona Lisa, the portrait of the wife of a Florentine merchant. A painting generally ascribed to this period is the St. Anne, Mary, and the Child, a work that exemplifies Leonardo's handling of summate misty, subtle transitions in tone.
Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6th 1475. His family was politically prominent as his family had large land property. His father was a banker and was looking to his son to engage in his businesses. As a young boy, he has ambitions of becoming a sculptor, but his father was very discouraging of this. He wanted his son to live up to the family name and take up his father’s businesses. Michelangelo became friends with Francesco Granacci, who introduced him to Domenico Ghirlandio(biography.com). Michelangelo and his father got into a series of arguments until eventually they arranged for him to study under Ghirlandaio at the age of thirteen. Ghirlandaio watched Michelangelo work and recognized his talent for the art and recommended him into an apprenticeship for the Medici family palace studio after only one year of at the workshop. Michelangelo signed a contract to be paid 450 ducats if he completed the sculpture in one year. Gladly, he finished the sculpture successfully. Christian beliefs and ideas have been portrayed in artwork since the beginning of Christianity, although, it was not always acceptable to do so. The idea of the final judgement is a Christian idea that has been displayed in art repeatedly in a variety of ways. Michelangelo’s fresco the Last Judgment (1536-1541) is a piece that visualizes this idea. Since the time it was finished, this significant piece found in the Sistine Chapel has been continuously critiqued and analyzed. Many Christians struggle to interpret the event of a final judgment after reading it through Scripture. In analyzing Michelangelo’s piece, it is similar difficult to determine what he exactly meant to portray and what the various part of his masterpiece represent exactly. Many have examined this piece and made different regarding what exactly the various figures and objects are supposed to represent. The diverse interpretations of this work further shows the idea that when Christian ideas are reflected through artwork, it is hard to ascertain exactly what an artist intended to demonstrate. In addition, the controversies surrounding this piece represent the idea that when Christian ideas are revealed through art, there is potential for disagreement regarding what should and should not be included in Christian art. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is just an example of what results when Christianity is brought into art.
Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance times, as well as one of the greatest of all time. “Lost Battles: Leonardo, Michelangelo and the Artist Duel that Defined the Renaissance,” a book written by Jonathan Jones, is about the artistic feud that existed between Leonardo Da’ Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarotti during the late 15th and 16th centuries. No different than today, the Florentine society of the renaissance enjoyed a heated rivalry between two social figures. Additionally, feuds were usually started to cleanse one’s name and/or their family’s name of dishonor or in the spirit of competition. Even more so, every feud had the potential of ending in death; for instance, in Lost Battles Jones asserts that according to Vasari “artists do not merely try to outdo one another but even… commit murder out of professional jealousy” (20). By combining his studies, Leonardo writes multiple books including the Codex Leicester. Leonardo became curious in Astronomy and planned to write a treatise on it, but he never did.
