Another issue with race is Miamifield’s community perspective and involvement with it. Miamifield community members have been sharply criticized for ignoring the history and literature of racial minorities in the United States and the world. Adults in the local African American, Latino, and Asian American populations had recently formed a coalition demanding that a series of eleventh-grade ethnic studies courses be developed and offered as alternatives to any student who might wish to study American history or literature from a different perspective. Issues in Miamifield will not get solved unless the whole community is willing to help fix the issues. In addition, this is a huge problem because it is limiting students’ education. If a student wants to take an ethnic studies course instead of American history or literature the student should be allowed to because if a student is in a class that is interesting to them it will lead to the student to paying more attention and learning more in that class. In an article about what students wanted from teachers and what they wanted from their school the article stated “We asked students to describe a time when they felt in charge of their learning in school—when they were working not just for a grade but because they were excited and interested” (ascd.org). This is so important because it supports that if a student gets excited and interested about a class they will learn better. Also, the school mascot being a redskin might not be offensive to everyone but it is still offensive to some people. In fact, the park recently celebrated its 150th anniversary with great fanfare, attesting its historic importance and role it’s played in city life for generations. Few people, however, know the true history of the park, such as its connection to Central Park and the role it played in the development of Brooklyn real estate in the late 19th century. Have you ever wondered why the Tampa Bay area is always so hot and storms every afternoon in the summer time? Living in Tampa my whole life I never thought twice about why every day in the summer time we were hit with an afternoon thunderstorm, it was just common knowledge. Tampa Bay is in Florida, and also known as the lightning capital of the United States of America. Florida is right at the most south eastern portion of the United States and is a peninsula, so the conditions are just right for afternoon thunderstorms. There is much more than just simple evaporation and precipitation going on, there is a list of consistent factors at play that cause the Tampa Bay area to receive these thunderstorms. Some of the factors that cause Tampa Bay to have such a predictable climate are the air masses surrounding the south eastern portion of the United States and cold fronts coming from the west.
The Ocean Hill Brownsville school controversy was a case study of race relations during the 1960’s. This predominantly black area wished to have jurisdiction over their schools’ operations and curricula. In 1967, the superintendent of schools granted Ocean Hill Brownsville “community control” of their district. The Board of Education’s action was part of a new decentralization policy that wanted to disperse New York City’s political powers locally. Once in place, the Unit Administrator, Rhody McCoy, fired several teachers inciting one of the most profound racial standoffs in the city’s history. The evolution of the national civil rights movement parallels the changing attitudes of blacks involved in Ocean Hill Brownsville. In addition, evidence of differing theories concerning assimilation to the American ethnicity is portrayed through the actions of the participants.
From beginning to end the reader is bombarded with all kinds of racism and discrimination described in horrific detail by the author. His move from Virginia to Indiana opened a door to endless threats of violence and ridicule directed towards him because of his racial background. For example, Williams encountered a form of racism known as modern racism as a student at Garfield Elementary School. In regards to the use of Indian mascots by elementary, middle and high school sports teams, I feel that children should be exposed to realistic and positive portrayals of American Indians during their educational years rather than something that can be taken as bigoted. It is the responsibility of educators to set the example and teach the youth of today to respect other ethnic or minority peoples - NOT to exploit or disrespect them by using them as 'mascots' or stereotypical 'images' which perpetuates racism.
Issue of whether to keep Mascots in schools or not, started in late 1970’s and from then this debate is going on. Most of the schools have Indian Mascots in place for half a century and suddenly it become problem to use Indian Mascots. Over 500 Native American organizations also announced their support for the removal of those mascots and over 1200 schools across the United States have changed the name of their sports teams and some school refused to play with those schools using Indian mascots. But some school still think that using mascots are just paying homage to the Native peoples and it’s just another group claiming to be offended. The NCAA and the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma seem to find this as being racist and demeaning to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The NCAA, at first, was against it for the previous reasons until they were aware that the Seminole Tribe was in favor of the mascot because it respects their traditions and displays a tribute to them. The NCAA went on to grant a waiver to the school and remove them from their list of colleges that use hostile or abusive imagery towards Native American groups. It is thought that using a mascot with references to certain Native American tribes or traditions is racist, but in fact it is really promoting the culture of the tribe and the traditions of the tribe. The Washington Redskins have seen the name Redskins under scrutiny by the public frequently, but when the president was asked about it he described the team name to be a courageous symbol, and that it shows the strength of the Native Americans. Aside from professional sports teams having offensive names, high school and college teams also have offensive names. In Greenly, Colorado at the University of Northern Colorado, their mascot is the Fightin’ Reds. Of course, this name sounds very racists, depicting Native Americans in a very harsh manner. Students on the basketball team renamed their team, The Fightin’ Whites. They were trying to depict the 1950’s style of the average American male. Their slogan for their team is “Every thang’s going to be all white.” By making this new mascot and new slogan, the basketball team was trying to get their city council to talk about the insensitive team mascots that their school, along with thousands of other schools have. In Eaton, Colorado the people who live there are amazed by all the madness that is going on about the school’s mascot. They are perfectly happy with the mascot, and to them it seems like it would be breaking tradition if someone were to change their mascot. Even though there are many people who hate the school’s mascot and vote for it to be changed, there are also some people who love it and do not want to be changed. Some people think it is a honor for a school’s mascot to be named after their culture. But the number of people for the mascots do not even compare to the number of people opposed to the mascots. The city of Longtown, Ohio is crashing down. The population of blacks is decreasing, and the population of whites is increasing. Individuals in Longtown have a past of integration, and Connor Keiser is trying to preserve the life him and his ancestors have lived. Riverside should adapt some of the ways Longtown, Ohio functions. The city has demonstrated unity and the positive ways black and white people live together. The article by Washington Post, “Ohio town holds rare history: Races mix freely for nearly 200 years” expresses the need for integration and how Connor Keiser plans to save it. The foundation of Longtown was by James Clemens, and according to the great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson the town has a past history that should not be changed.

The author purpose for writing a book on racism is to show people different views of racism in America. Jennifer Hurley the author wanted to clear up the debates in current controversies of race problems in America. Some people believe the civil rights movement effectively eliminated racism in American society. Other people believe that racism is still alive and is prominent in African Americans lives, holding them back from their progression in American society. She focused on the history of racism, what was done to resolve the problems in America society, and what we can do towards the future to make the problem even better. She wanted to make an important resource for librarians, teachers, and student for many years to come. Having readers thinking about critical subjects will make their opinionated evaluation on racism enhanced. The author gives us the pros and cons of the issue of racism to have a well rounded ideal of the subject. The author did not just focus on one side of the story but both from the eyes of blacks and whites in America. Which gave it a theme gave it a theme of racism from eyes of all.
Combine this trend with what Rebekah Nathan calls “community through elective participation” and one can begin to understand why colleges and universities are virtually unable to actually engage a majority of students under the idea of “community”. But why does this trend of racial isolation vanish when minorities are studied? The author noticed that of the people she interviewed, 5/6 whites had no people in their social circle who were a minority. Contrast this with 5/6 minority students who had at least one member of a different race in their friend group. I was completely shocked when I read this, not only by the statistics, but by the fact that I emulated them. For my summary, I am writing to teachers who will relay information back to high school students through the addition of racism to their cirriculum. My purpose is to convince the teachers that racial identity is a crucial topic that high school students need to be more aware of. The advantage of informing high school students of the role that racism plays throughout society is to assist the students in being less racist and treating non-whites fair.
