Picture this you were just getting up or sleeping, on September, 19, 1985 at 7:17 AM and then the ground started to shake! “IT’S AN EARTHQUAKE”, you would yell and hopefully jump out of bed and go outside so you don't get smashed by pieces of your house. The cause of this earthquake was two plates that slide past each other. This giant earthquake killed thousands and destroyed thousands of buildings in Mexico city also this earthquake spread a long ways. There was a earthquake 4 months prior to the real earthquake so this could be an effect of this quake. As a result this caused a major natural disaster beyond belief. The effects of this earthquake was that it killed thousands, cost billions, and destroyed thousands of buildings.

Damage was localized to the center parts of the city, leaving much of the residential outer rim unscathed, but the damage in the affected area was extensive. This documentary called “The Storm that Swept Mexico”, talks about one of the most important events in Mexican history which was the Mexican revolution which started on 1910 and lasted for about 10 years. At first this video starts talking about how Mexico lost a major part of their land in Mexican American war. The states that Mexico lost were Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and California in 1848, by president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Moreover, another war mentioned was the one Mexico had against France called “Battle of Puebla”. After this atrocious war Mexico had 20 years of peace until the Mexican revolution in 1910 took place. This very interesting video dragged my attention due to the fact that it explains precisely every important figure that was involved in such a big movement. Furthermore, in this fascinating video I learned a lot of interesting facts about Porfirio Diaz. For example, he is the president that lasted 30 years in power, and was the president number thirty to rule Mexico. Another interesting fact about this iconic figure is that his period as Mexican president was called the “Porfiriato”
In 1910 a series of fifty-two earthquakes struck Arizona between September 10th-23rd and it caused much of the Flagstaff residents to flee the area as even strong households cracked and chimneys crumbled. The fifty-two earthquakes were all light-shock earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0-4.2 that came right after another. If only one earthquake occurred in that timespan then it is likely that only objects would be knocked from shelves but no damage would be done to infrastructure, but the earthquakes happened right after another causing significant slight
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was one of the largest earthquakes in the United States. Even though it only lasted less than a minute, the damages and aftermath of the earthquake were disastrous. These damages were not just from the earthquake, but also from other hazards that occurred because of it. It also had a huge effect on the people living in San Francisco. Many people, the government, and other countries helped the city of San Francisco with relief goods like food and clothing. The city used up their resources in order to rebuild the city and spent a lot of money. This earthquake also started a scientific revolution about earthquakes and its effects.
At 5:12 a.m. on April 18th, 1906, the California city of San Francisco was awoken by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Chaos erupted with the earthquake leading to fire break outs throughout San Francisco (Cameron and Gordon. Pgs 69-73).The earthquake and the resulting fires caused destruction to majority of the city with buildings crumbling and igniting into flames. Many people died along with thousands and thousands of people being left homeless. This devastating earthquake left the city and United States in a financial crisis. Although the 1906 earthquake was one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, the city of San Francisco was able to overcome these substantial physical, social and economic impacts it had.

The United States has been the main contributor to the cartels’ takeover of Mexico, and the current policy approach of limiting the United State’s role has failed. History has exhibited our inability to make peace with Mexico, and without considerable reform to our approach to the “War on Drugs” relations between the countries will not improve.

My topic is earthquakes it was one of the biggest earthquakes of all time. It happened in San Francisco, in California. The Magnitude was 7.8 and the date was April 18, 1906 the 7.8 is from the richer scale of earthquake energy.
As the tectonic plates slide over each other, they cause earthquakes. Earthquakes produce various damaging effects, this includes damage to structures of buildings, bridges and other standing formations which then result in injuries and people getting killed, wildlife getting disrupted as well as humans. An earthquake can affect the earth as it’s easier to let the lava come out of the earth. Tsunamis- Can cause financial problems such as home loss, job loss which will then result in being homeless, loss of crops and food supplies which causes a lot of harm to us ‘humans’. A tsunami is a series of waves that send surges of water that can travel thousands of miles.

The second failure consists of more than one action, or combined action, by sliding and rocking displacements or during an earthquake. During an earthquake, soil is displaced vertically and laterally due to a sudden release of energy, the cause of earthquakes. In area where seismic activity is readily occurring, the retaining wall must account for these displacements, in addition with the typical requirements. These requirements consist of a factory of safety against failure in bearing, sliding, and overturning.

In addition to possibly causing tsunamis, earthquakes are responsible for releasing enormous amounts of energy that spread through the crust as seismic waves. These seismic waves include P-waves and S-waves. While P-waves do not cause as much destruction due to their vertical movement, S-waves can cause buildings to collapse completely due to the waves’ lateral movement. In addition to collapsing buildings, earthquakes can also cause liquefaction which is when loosely packed soils temporarily behave like liquids, resulting in sliding and sinking buildings (Harris). Earthquakes have been responsible for 60% of all deaths caused by natural disasters in the past decade (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).
Now once an earthquake happens we realize that there are a lot of things that are needed to help the communities that were affected by the earthquake as well as all the damages it causes. As we know that an earthquake cause the earth to move therefore if it happens in an area where there is a lot of water it can cause huge tidal wave which can cause more damage. This can also cause a lot of death due to drowning because people would not be expecting the water to move as fast as it does as well as getting crushed by falling material
