However, they are protected by some groups. The Mexican axolotl is one of the most scientifically studied animals because it is the one of the only species that can regenerate limbs after they lose them. The Mexican axolotls are endangered because of people frequently draining and polluting the water. They are also endangered because in Mexico, they are served as a Mexican delicacy. Furthermore, the digging of wells for the thriving population of Mexico City has led to cause harm to the species. They are also captured for medical purposes.

Additionally, they have been captured for pet trade. Furthermore, introducing new predatory animals such as tilapia and carp also has a negative effect to the species.
The Mexican axolotls have many features. The color of the Mexican axolotls is usually pink and brown. Uniquely, the axolotl retains its larval features into adulthood. Their size is up to twelve inches. Their skin is soft and smooth. In addition, it has four legs and one tail. They are also amphibian and usually lay about 1,000 eggs. They have babies from January to March, sometimes during April.
The Mexican axolotls live in the complex of Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco near Mexico City. They require deep-water lakes with plentiful aquatic vegetation. The Mexican axolotls eats small fish, worms, and almost anything it can fit in its mouth.
Nevertheless, conservation action to protect the Mexican axolotls’ population in the wild is focusing on raising alerts about the Mexican axolotls through educating others about these animals. Moreover, people are working on habitat restoration and bioremediation. This way, the eggs will be more likely to survive. The species is protected under the category PR (special protection) by the government of Mexican and is in the process of being adjusted to a higher risk category.
