I am applying to be considered for a merit and leadership scholarship. As someone who fundamentally believes in getting involved, I pride myself on engaging with the community and there is nothing I am more passionate about then the community within the Business School.

My engagement began in first year as a member of the Undergraduate Student Advisory Council – a leadership role which offered a platform to relay students’ concerns, offer feedback on core units, assessment practices and Business School programs. This experience taught me the importance of providing feedback and the concept of continuous improvement. As a publications executive for Sydney University Business Society I was responsible for leading a team of 7 students to create a 50+ page First Year’s Guide and Careers’s Guide. Completing this task taught me the importance of motivating your team, maintaining open and clear communication channels, setting deadlines, effectively delegating tasks and project management skills through the development of a Gantt chart to monitor progress. As an executive I am also responsible for recruiting subcommittee members by screening applications and conducting interviews, and for securing sponsorship from large corporations such as EY, JP Morgan, CBA and Chartered Accountants. This leadership role has aided in improving my client facing skills and business acumen.

I have also been a volunteer consultant for 180 Degrees consulting. Throughout the course of a semester I worked within a team of 6 consultants to produce a 65+ page client report, consisting of recommendations for a $20,000 crowdfunding campaign, the development of an ambassador program and advice regarding philanthropic grant applications. This leadership position offered a platform to be a role model for younger students and gain a deep understanding of the importance of encouraging collaboration and peer-to-peer learning. I faced the challenge of facilitating sessions for international students with weak English language skills and a different learning background. From this I learned the importance of having empathy and being inclusive of all cultures. Understanding that many of these students felt anxious speaking in front of the entire class, I often split students into smaller groups and had individual discussions within each group before asking students to share their ideas with the entire class.
