Mental Illness In Finding Nemo

The focus of my essay is looking at the two extremes of how filmmakers portray mental illness in their films. On one side of the spectrum there is what I like to call the “frivolous” side. This side focuses on movies that are light-hearted and/or have love of some sort. The other extreme of spectrum is what I call the “trepidatious” side. This side of the extreme focuses on movies that are more serious and that have many moments of suspense. The initial “frivolous” movie I choose is “Finding Nemo.” Finding nemo is a very cute movie that shows mental illness in an innocent way. There are two fish in the movie one has a mental already and another fish develops one towards the end. Dory is the fish that in the movie struggles with short- term memory loss. Although the subject matter is a serious condition they found a way to bring real life and romance together well. Even though they have a mental illness they are the same as us in many ways like they want careers and families too. There is one difference that I can completely agree with and that is when Pat says “Maybe there is something that we see that you don’t see, have you ever thought of it like that?” (Silver Linings Playbook, 2012) “Silver Linings” was a great movie in the way that they portrayed bipolarism in Pat and Tiffany. They did a great job of depicting someone that is bipolar. Of course they did generalize the illness because not everyone that is bipolar has those same reactions to situations symptoms of bipolarism. This movie gave me a better understanding of the different ways you can depict an illness it can be sweet and lovely or more extreme and violent.
