Even though many people feel that the homeless are responsible for their condition, anyone can become homeless because of mental disturbance. Mentally ill people are chronically homeless. They need to have access to not only mental health services but also treatment. Mental illness can also cause physical issues, so they also need access to physical care. The National Mental Health Association was established back in 2006. They also provide, employment training, as well as money management skills, and peer support groups. The National Mental Health Association also has services that provide for a person's physical health. ("Http://www.nationalhomeless.org/factsheets/mental_illness.pdf", 2009) In conclusion, though there are homeless shelters, they are not a permanent solution to the problem of homelessness. Due to the shortage of access to mental health care and services, many of them remain either homeless or reliant on subsidy housing. Mentally ill individuals also need access to correct employment training, life skills, and money management skills. I also believe that the mentally ill need support from their peers as well to stay off the streets. Without these services, we as Americans will end up with an economic burden in the billions of dollars.
