Mental health has fell into one of the more questionable topics in life: Is it real or fake? Does having mental health issues make you crazy? Often, mental health is portrayed as delusional or a “phase” to many unaware people. This only makes it harder for the affected population. It builds walls and create insecurities that allow people to express themselves; and to hide your feelings and to be rejected of the help you desperately need, only piles on top of the struggles. I have had my own an experience with mental health, and I know how it feels to feel abandoned and detached from reality. I speak for all when I say that treating mental health as a phase and not acknowledging the fact that is, not only brings more distress on those effect;
but it also makes those feel as if their feelings are not valid or important enough to be dealt with. It’s not what the media characterizes it as (being sad, anti-social, or even crazy). Anyone can experience this, but how you decide to treat it, is how it will affect you. As a Black American female, I have seen that it has been normalized in the black community to not talk about mental health. Black parents don’t usually communicate with their children about their feelings and they easily shut ideas about mental health out. Forcing their kids to “feel better”, telling them “Oh, you won’t feel like that tomorrow” or “That’s the devil trying to mess with you”, but never actually doing anything other than “disciplining” them for being “disrespectful.” Yet, they wonder why there children don’t like to talk to them. It is a fear that has been embedded into our minds that we have to pretend to be okay, when it’s not. We know that there is something wrong with us, but because of the foolish thought that we can’t share these feelings, we hurt. We hurt, we cry, we die inside because we can’t find the will to live anymore. There are People all over the world that feel this way. I speak for those who cannot speak for themselves; The broken, the weak, the tired. There has been far too many tragedies occur because of the lack of awareness in this bearing. I want to build a platform created for others to be able to stand on and have a voice. For those who want to see a change in the world, starting with mental health.
Is acceptance of mental illness the key to living a more fulfilled life? I first became interested in bipolar or, manic-depression a few years ago when somebody close to me was diagnosed with it. I wanted to understand it better, but found that the jargon and detached observations of psychiatric theory and practice that you can find on the internet didn’t really help me to understand what people actually go through. Kay Redfield Jamison’s ‘An Unquiet Mind’ manages to cut through all that to create a fiery, passionate, authentic account of the psychotic experience and introduce you to the facts of the illness without you even realizing it. Kay Jamison’s story is proof that mentally ill people, with help from medication, can live a wonderful life.
Mental illness is more common than one would like to believe. In reality, one in five Americans will suffer from a mental disorder in any given year. Though that ratio is about equivalent to more than fifty-four million people, mental illness still remains a shameful and stigmatized topic (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). The taboo of mental illness has an extensive and exhausting history, dating back to the beginning of American colonization. It has not been an easy road, to say the least.
The discussion of mental health is slowly being brought to the social surface to create a more inclusive society for those dealing with a mental illness. However, those with a mental illness are continuously being affected by stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination by those who simply don’t comprehend the complexity of the human brain (Glaser, G.2017). As more people become mental health activist, they are exposing the plethora of issues surrounding the overall mental and physical stability of those who are negatively affected by the social construct of what it means to be normal.
In today’s society, the stigma around mental health has caused many people to fear seeking medical treatment for problems they are dealing with. With an abundance of hateful outlooks and stereotypical labels such as: crazy, psycho, and dangerous, it is clear that people with a mental illness have a genuine reason to avoid pursuing medical treatments. Along with mental health stigma, psychiatric facilities that patients with a mental health issue attend in order to receive treatment obtain an excessive amount of unfavorable stereotypes.

Why is there a cloud of judgment and misunderstanding still surrounding the subject? People with a mental disorder or with a history of mental health issues are continually ostracized by society. This results in it being more difficult than it already is for the mentally ill to admit their symptoms to others and to seek treatment. To towards understanding mental illness is to finally lift the stigma, and to finally let sufferers feel safe and accepted within today’s society. There are many ways in which the mentally ill are degraded and shamed.

But like many people, mental health is overlooked. Most teenagers do not realize that the many things like stress or eating disorders are coming from a poor mental state. By increasing the importance of personal mental health, people can reduce issues associated with mental health problems and raise awareness for people who suffer from mental health issues.
