What is Mental Health and Illnesses?
Mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” (World Health Organisation, 2014). It is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many others.

Approximately one in eleven people (8.9%) in Australia have reported having depression during the period of time from 2014 to 2015. The rate of people reporting depression or feelings of depression increased until around 55-64 years of age (13.7%). Females are reported of having depression or feelings of depression at a higher rate than males (10.4% compared with 7.4% respectively). Similarly to depression during 2014-15, around one in eight females (13.0%) reported having an anxiety-related condition compared with around one in ten males (9.4%). Risk factors include, being involved of stressful life situations, Traumatic experiences (such as being in military or being assaulted) and the use of alcohol and recreational drugs. Stressful life situations for example loss of a job are considered to be a risk factor as it can create negative thoughts about oneself and their ability in that area, which can lead to the development of Anxiety or Depression. Traumatic Experiences like being assaulted or have previously served in military is considered to be a risk factor in developing a mental health problem due to the hard emotions felt when remembering those experiences or having flashbacks, which can cause the individual to develop depression with the constant feeling of negativity. The use of recreational drugs and alcohol are a risk factor due to the extreme highs and lows the drugs cause whether the drug is a depressant or a stimulus. The constant use of a depressant drug leads to depression and anxiety due to the lows becoming too extreme for them to cope
Mental illness plagues one out of four American citizens. Mental illness varies greatly from person to person. The spectrum of mental illness includes many illnesses including, depression and anxiety as well as some more serious illnesses such as Down syndrome. All mental illness plays a role in how this person is going to function in society. These individuals have unique needs and individual strengths that need evaluated for proper care.
Mental health can described as being the psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment; this refers to our mental and emotional well-being. Once hearing that someone is mentally unhealthy, or has a mental illness, usually their first reaction is one of concern, fear, or confusion.

Mental health can be described as our positive interactions with the context and events in our life, and having the ability to cope with life’s stressors. That can only happen if the mental illness is heredity. Another factor of mental illness is psychological trauma. Psychological trauma like abuse, or loss can cause some mental illnesses. When mental illness is untreated it makes it difficult for the person to function in society and deal with everyday life. The different types of mental illnesses range from anxiety disorders to personality disorders. Mental health can be seen as a continuum where illnesses are defined as patterns of behaviour that cause psychological suffering, distress and disability preventing adequate functioning with the potential of risk of harm to the self or others (Martins-Mourao, 2010, p. 92).
Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions, or disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior ("Mental Illness"). Mental disorders are commonly left untreated for long periods of time because of the stigma our society has placed on mental issues. This forces individuals with mental illness to self-medication, frequently resulting in addictive behaviors. Persons with mental disorders seek ways to ease their discomfort and suffering. Marijuana can be used to treat an individuals depression or to ease pain. Stimulants can be used to get an otherwise lazy person motivated.

Inmates that were African Americans and Hispanics were more likely to be physically victimized either by inmates or staff.

Mental disorders can happen many times through one’s life, but mental illness is classified as an ongoing problem with the symptoms that can affect the ability to perform normal day to day tasks (Mayo Clinic). Many people look at those afflicted with mental disorders as being crazy or clinically insane, while the reality is a problem many people live with on a daily basis with help from medications, psychologist visits, family, friends, help groups, and many other support systems. The lack of support available to mentally ill patients, the more that will refuse treatment and refuse to find help for their disorders. Many people who were born with mental disorders grow up knowing they have a problem, but people who develop them later in age don’t understand how to cope with it.
Depression is a mental health condition which is widely recognised as one of the most common conditions for which people seek and receive care. There are many specific nursing problems which are encompassed by the medical term “depression” and these include physical, cognitive and behavioural patterns. Successful treatments of depression are psychosocial interventions which aim to identify and challenge a depressed persons pessimistic attitudes and beliefs and which promote an individuals’ participation in rewarding activities in an attempt to reduce any negative behaviours. The aim of this essay is to identify specific nursing problems which are encompassed by the term “depression” and relate these to a patient whom the author had met whilst out on clinical placement who had been given a medical diagnosis of depression. It is also the aim of this essay to discuss different psychosocial interventions and how effective these are in assisting a patient in their road to recovery.
