WHAT MAKES AN EXCELLENT MENTAL HEALTH NURSE

Mental health nursing ,is a speciality as it aims the holistic recovery of the service user, which depends totally on the nurses own commitment, compassion and care, which in turn relies on their own personnel qualities, professional skills and environmental factors.In order to establish this, research was done in Metro North Mental Health–Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (MNMH– RBWH) to inform quality improvementon the qualities of an excellent mental health nurse. A survey was conducted, by a group which included service users, carers and nurses. Firstly data was collected by unstructured interview, active listening skills and unscripted prompts. The collected data was then analysed and the reports were read cautiously and the similar reports were categorized and labelled specifically. This study lead on to the critical analysis and to prove that care, compassion and commitment are the most prominent qualities and on this relies the road to recovery. Our own individualities, specialized training, and preferences have necessarily shaped the representation of views of informants, understanding what matters to people hospitalized for the treatment of mental illnesses. It is obvious that clients are not looking for expensive treatments but for the nurse who has time to listen and honestly guide through this time of need.
The excellent mental health nurse is compassionate, attentive, and engaged in his or her work. Such qualities support the development of a culture that is conducive to sensitive anticipatory action, described by Weaver et al. (2003) as an approach to service delivery that is likely to optimize the
