In this Persuasive essay I will be comparing two films, "Memento" and "Ghajini". I will discuss the genres, the casting of the films, and how effective they were. I will also look at the cast, action, plot and productions, and how these are aimed at each film's target audience. Though both films have more similarities than differences, there are some major differences too. Both movies are of the same genre, psychological thriller. Psychological thriller is a thriller story which emphasizes the abnormal psychological states of its characters. They often incorporate elements of and overlap with mystery, drama, action, slasher, and horror. "Memento" is a 2000 American neo-noir psychological thriller film directed and written by Christopher …show more content…
Nolan and starring Guy Pearce in the lead role. Pearce plays Leonard, who as a result of a past trauma, suffers from anterograde amnesia. "Ghajini" is a 2008 Indian action psychological thriller film written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss and starring Amir Khan and Asin in the lead roles. Amir Khan plays Sanjay Singhania, a man who suffers from anterograde amnesia and Asin plays kalpana Shetty, a model who gains publicity by falsely proclaiming to be the girlfriend of Sanjay Singhania. In the film "Memento", Leonard is an insurance investigator whose memory has been damaged following a head injury he sustained after intervening on his wife's murder. His quality of life has been severely hampered after this event, and he can now only live a comprehendable life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera. The movie is told in forward flashes of events that are to come that compensate for his unreliable memory, during which he has liaisons with various complex characters. Leonard badly wants revenge for his wife's murder, but, as numerous characters explain, there may be little point if he won't remember it in order to provide closure for him. The movie veers between these future occurrences and a telephone conversation Leonard is having in his motel room in which he compares his current state to that of a client whose claim he once dealt with. In the film "Ghajini", Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan) is a rich tycoon suffering from short term memory loss due to being hit by a metal pole when trying to intervene on his girlfriend's murder.
Because of the severe injury on his head, his memory can only last for fifteen minutes and he doesn't remember events or incidents that have happened before in his life. He can now only live a comprehendible life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera to remind himself of the incidents that have happened. His story in unraveled by a police officer (Riyaz Khan) who is hunting him due to several murders he has committed while trying to find his girlfriend's murderer through his diary. His story has also piqued the interest of a medical college student, Sunita (Jiah Khan) who is searching for a patient with an "interesting" record for her college project. Sunita comes to know about Sanjay's love with Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal) a model activist. When her activist work for children comes in the way of child racketeers, she is killed by Ghajini when she intervened with his plan of kidnapping 25 young girls to Goa. So, with the help of Sunita, Sanjay sets out on a revenge spree, searching for the murderer of the one love of his …show more content…
life. Both Memento and Ghajini feature a main character that suffers from a unique memory loss condition. After a traumatic injury, they are unable to form any long-term memories, while still remembering everything up until the accident. On top of this condition, both characters are trying to find the man responsible for the death of their lover, the incident that caused their memory loss in the first place. This is what both the movies are essentially about, despite being told in completely different ways. Both Characters also use a Polaroid camera, hand-written notes and essentially condition themselves through rigorous routine to live life with meticulous care and borderline obsessive-compulsive tendencies. They both even have self-made tattoos to remind themselves of the more necessary and urgent, ‘need to know’ information, considering that their memory resets every few minutes. However, both movies have some major differences too.
Ghajini is a revenge story unlike Memento. Ghajini had elements like comedy, love track, songs, and dance geared towards Indian audience. The execution of two similar stories is where both movies differ greatly. Memento was revolutionary for its unique and innovative story telling technique of having the entire film happen backwards. Meaning that the last scene of the story is shown in the beginning of the movie, and the rest of the movie consists of small scenes leading up to it, in reverse order. On the contrary, Ghajini is a pretty linear story that follows a certain sequence of events, and ends with a typically happy ending, which provides closure for the audience, something which Memento intentionally foregoes. Moreover, Memento goes a step further and shows us the process used by the character to tattoo himself, something that Ghajini omits entirely, most likely due to the sensibility of an Indian audience in witnessing something so graphic. Memento, best classified as a thriller, brought to the limelight the acting prowess of Guy Pearce and forever cemented into history the future legendary status of Director Christopher Nolan and writer Jonathan Nolan. Nolan’s unique storytelling concept showed the world something that they never have before, and his movies since have invoked similarly iconic reactions. Ghajini, a more romantic action story was a major box office success, and proved once again that unconventional
stories in Bollywood do work. But more importantly, Aamir Khan’s yearlong dedication to the role by completely restructuring his physique and taking on the look of a body builder, broke all conventions of an actor’s commitment to a movie role, and raised the bar for an Indian actor quite significantly.
Wisps of burnt-out curtains drape over shattered window frames, fluttering helplessly like a bird with injured wings. Pieces of wood collapse snapping once they hit the ground. Smoke swirls around in the wind. No sound can be heard except for the occasional sobs escaping the chapped lips of people visiting what is left of their homes. The once busy city of Amsterdam is now nothing but a city of forgotten souls. In 1942, the Franks and the Van Daans moved into a warehouse located in Amsterdam to escape the perilous world outside, where the Holocaust was taking place. Jews like the Franks and the Van Daans had their rights taken away from them. The Gestapo, the police working for the Nazis, rounded up people to be sent to concentration camps, where people worked to death. Margot Frank was one of them. Many Jews had to leave the country to escape, while the two families, and later on a man named Dussel, lived on the top floor of the warehouse called the Secret Annex. Living in such a small space and having sparse food with so many people was not easy. On weekdays, not a noise was to be made otherwise the workmen below would hear them. Food and other items had to be brought in by Miep and Mr. Kraler, who risked their lives to help the members of the Secret Annex. To keep herself company, Anne Frank wrote in her diary almost every day. Later on, her diary was published, and two authors decided that they would write a play based on the published diary, named The Diary of Anne Frank. Goodrich and Hackett created memorable characters in their play. Among these people, Otto Frank stood out, who emerged as a good leader because he put himself before others, made rough decisions when problems rose, and stayed positive and optimistic even dur...
Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
... and negative associations within the genre. Even with the obvious differences, both styles have borrowed concepts from the other, enriching each of their popularity in cinema.
These two films are very different from other crime movies, and break the classical genre of crime. They can be considered as revisionists, and put a twist on the typical crime movies. In the classical genre of crime it is always consist of the same thing which include traditional criminals; only caring about themselves, seen as an anti-hero, agent of oppression by taking from anyone just to get rich, taking advantage of the system (for their own purposes), and wanting to live the American Dream. Whereas in the revisionist have this unique way of making the audience fall in love and have them rooting for the criminals, this is because; they critic what is right and wrong with society, show the oppression of the people, are one of the people, a social rebels, and most of all they know who they are and where they come from.

Since the creation of films, their main goal was to appeal to mass audiences. However, once, the viewer looks past the appearance of films, the viewer realizes that the all-important purpose of films is to serve as a bridge connecting countries, cultures, and languages. This is because if you compare any two films that are from a foreign country or spoken in another language, there is the possibility of a connection between the two because of the fact that they have a universally understanding or interpretation. This is true for the French New Wave films; Contempt and Breathless directed by Jean-Luc Godard, and contemporary Indian films; Earth and Water directed by Deepa Mehta. All four films portray an individual’s role in society using sound and editing.
In both, the feelings of dread and fear are experienced simultaneously. The goal for these films is to scare and thrill the audience. Horror can thrill and Thrillers can horrify. Another similarity is the dramatic context. Characters are confronted by some conflict and usually flee from the turbulent situation. In the end, the characters end up being forced to confront the conflict. Both genres contain some level of suspense and mystery. Overall, horror and thriller are two genres that are easily mistaken for each other because of the overlapping
SOURCES: You will need to incorporate at least four (4) of these sources into your essay. If you use too few sources, your own argument will appear uninformed and superficial. If you use too many sources, your own argument will get lost in the clamor of all those other voices. The trick is to use enough sources to prove that you’ve read about and thought through the issue, which includes using sources to support your position and sources to offer counterarguments to your position. Four sources is a good target number to find that balance
When I sit down to write a paper I simply just stare outside from where I’ am sitting, until a great sentence comes flying across my head. If that doesn’t work or simply start double guessing myself, I end the conflict in bringing both my sister and parents into the argument. As a result, they end up resolving the issue through stating what sounds great on the sentence, or what can be done to make it sound better, by following all prerequisites. Most of which ends up giving an excellent pay off, since my parents are in my personal opinion a great help when it comes to starting an essay. While others may argue that parents don’t have sufficient educational background as to help them with anything related to school.
The film’s story does not simply shines forth, but is also the foundation of the plot. The film’s plot makes the traditional guidelines applicable...
Barsam, R. M., Monahan, D., & Gocsik, K. M. (2012). Looking at movies: an introduction to film (4th ed.). New York: W.W. Norton & Co..
Throughout the semester, I have developed many skills and have greatly improved on my writing. At the beginning of the year, I had no clue how to format a paper in APA. I had only used MLA format before this year, so I was clueless. Also, I never knew how to correctly write an introduction. I did not know that an introduction needed to include a hook. I knew that it needed a thesis statement but I was never writing my thesis correctly, until this year. Finally, I never knew how to correctly include transitions.
“Entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little bit of medicine, some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything’s okay. I don’t make those kinds of movies. That, to me, is a lie. Everything’s not okay.” - David Fincher. David Fincher is the director that I am choosing to homage for a number of reasons. I personally find his movies to be some of the deepest, most well made, and beautiful films in recent memory. However it is Fincher’s take on story telling and filmmaking in general that causes me to admire his films so much. This quote exemplifies that, and is something that I whole-heartedly agree with. I am and have always been extremely opinionated and open about my views on the world and I believe that artists have a responsibility to do what they can with their art to help improve the culture that they are helping to create. In this paper I will try to outline exactly how Fincher creates the masterpieces that he does and what I can take from that and apply to my films.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
No joke. Some might disagree because of all the blood and gore, the mentally beating up or anything gross. Some characteristics are; blood and gore, gross scenes, death, some sex scenes, a lot more death, a twist usually at the end, foreshadowing to who or what the killer is, mentally and physically torturing, and violence. See? Horror movies don’t sound so bad, right? Honestly, there are so many types of horror movies out there some on netflix are considered thrillers but I think not. All horror movies have this awful suspense that makes you want to vomit because the suspense is real and scary. A couple of scary movies that recently came out are, “The Conjuring 2 and Don’t Breathe,” some movies can be realistic as in based on true events. Some people might consider Jaws to be a horror movies because of all the blood and people have fears of sharks. Horror movies have something about them that make a person want to watch more and dig deeper to find the ultimate horror movies. Like the ones with based on true events but have a lot of blood and gore to them. Makes people wonder if it actually did happen that way and if there was that amount of blood and gore. Horror movies and romance movies are on a totally different universe that should never come
