The Melamine Milk Crisis pertains to a Chinese milk contamination, which affected thousands of infants causing hospitalization or in some cases death (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Furthermore, melamine is product used in the production of plastics and laminates, and when added to milk melamine increases the overall protein content contained in the milk (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Consequently, melamine is and dangerous and illegal in milk products, because through consumption melamine can cause kidney stones and renal failure (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Therefore, in 2008, some Chinese milk distributors were diluting milk and adding melamine to extend the product usage, and the enhanced protein content demanded higher retail value (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). …show more content…
Subsequently, the Chinese based-company, the Sanlu Group was using milk containing melamine for use in its baby formula (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Now, that we understand the background of this crisis let us, examine how the Sanlu Group reacted to the incident. When the Sanlu Group initially started purchasing this product the corporation was oblivious to fact that melamine was present within their baby formula; however, members of the company's staff later learned their baby formula contained the harmful product but continued to distribute the melamine-laced product anyway (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014).
As a result of the melamine based infant formula, infants across China's provinces were being hospitalized for kidney stones (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Subsequently, the World Health Organization revealed the Sanlu Group's infant formula caused more than 54,000 children to seek medical treatment and four fatalities were reported (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Previously, the Sanlu Group received complaints about their product as early as March, 2008, but the company's representatives dismissed the claims as a fallacy (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Furthermore, since a partner of the Sanlu Group verified the presence of melamine in early August 2008, why did the company suppress the findings to the public and the government until September 11, 2008 (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan,
2014). The partner company Fonterra allegedly suppressed the melamine contamination due to the Summer Olympic Games (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Also, the New Zealand based partner was concerned about the reputation of its Chinese partner, but Fonterra contacted their embassy, which alerted the Chinese government of the melamine contamination crisis (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Finally, the Sanlu Group publicly expressed accountability for the melamine-laced milk product and as a result of the crisis the president of the Sanlu Group fired their president (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Consequently, as a result of the Sanlu Group's unethical business practices, the corporation filed for bankruptcy within four months of the crisis public release. References Crandall, W., Parnell, J. A., & Spillan, J. E. (2014). Crisis management in the new strategy landscape (2nd ed.). Los Angeles: SAGE.

Although Fuller made every attempt it thought was necessary to prevent its products from causing harm, it could have provided more intervention. First, H.B. Fuller should have put more research into mustard seed oil and its effect on adhesives like the United States' chemical companies had done. Research into this solution would involve consulting with the FDA to solidify positive results. This could have very well been an easy solution to Fuller and the Latin American children. Second, Fuller should have decided to discontinue its product earlier than it did. If it did make this decision, then all sales should be eliminated, not just to retailers but to industrial vendors as well. Lastly, the company should have communicated more effectively with its parent company in the US to formulate a sound plan to addressing its ethical dilemma.
On January 4, 2011 President Obama signed into law The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This law has shed new light on the safety and security of our food supply. The last update to the food safety laws in the United States was in 1938. The food safety modernization act pays special attention at trying to modernize the food safety policies in the United States in hopes to prevent problems and concerns before they happen. As we all know, most of our food comes from overseas or sometimes from your neighboring state. The food products travel by car, truck, airplane, boat, or even train. We are all very happy to be receiving our bananas from Costa Rica and all of our other fresh fruits and vegetables that are imported into the United States, but we never stop to think about what pathogens are contaminating our produce and other foods on the way over and if they are safe for us to eat. In an article by Neal Fortin, he states that the law also gives the FDA new standards to hold imported foods to the domestic food standards and it also encourages the FDA to establish and develo...
Since when does sexy conduct healthier and better milk? The two print ads that I am introducing to you is a milk from the Coca-Cola Company. The milk is called Fairlife and comes in different flavors: 2% reduced fat, 2% chocolate, fat free, and whole. Their tag line is “Believe in a better milk”.
Since the beginning of time, people have been drinking milk. Even today you will find a gallon of milk in almost every refrigerator in America. Milk is, and has always been, a staple of our diet. Because it contains essential proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins, milk is considered one of nature's perfect foods. Unfortunately, throughout the last century milk has been subjected to many forms of modern processing practices, which deprive milk from many of its natural qualities and benefits. Therefore many essential vitamins and enzymes are lost. Processing milk has altered one of nature’s perfect foods and changed it into something nature did not intend. Because of the abundant health benefits in raw milk, this report will explain why it should be made legal for consumers to buy throughout the United States.
Customers/Consumers were worried about the changes in the market for food and drugs because they no longer had a single clue of what was in their products. Food production was moving from household prepared to general markets. As food markets became more refined due to the improvement of technology. The difficulty in discerning the quality of their product heightened. With new and quicker ways make food, fears of the ingredients that the foods consisted grew. Preservatives and chemicals also instilled a concern to consumers. Health officials, chemists, and other individuals tested and proved the dangers of these new additives.
Every year millions of animals such as rabbits, cats, and mice are used to test new products such as cosmetics, household cleaners, and medicines that often lead to poisoning and even death. In China, it is required that all products are tested on animals before being released to the public; on the contrary, the United States does not have this same requirement (Facts). As a result of the Animal Welfare Act being signed- making it illegal to test on humans- scientists use animals because the tests are similar to human testing. Only 6% of animals used in assessing the safety of new medicines and vaccines suffer in great pain because using anesthetics would alter the validity of the data (Kanade). Animal testing is the most effective technique for evaluating medicine and cosmetics because the animal’s anatomy is similarly structured to humans. Mice are the mos...
The idea of pasteurizing milk bagan in the 1920s, and later became an aspect of everyday life in the 1950s. Milk that has undergone this process is normally prefered since it is sterilized, therefore lowering the chance of human illness. However, it’s not the 1950s anymore, and the idea of pasteurizing milk has lost its luster for the people that now prefer raw milk. Unlike the milk that most Americans consume, raw milk has not been pasteurized, or quickly heated to a high temperature to kill harmful bacteria. In raw milk, these bacterias haven’t been removed, leaving people at risk. E. Coli, salmonella, and listeria are only some of the bacteria that raw milk carries, all of which can cause sickness, or even death. Common affects of consuming raw milk are diarrhea, stomach cramping, and vomiting, but it's the rare ones: kidney failure, paralysis, and death that causes raw milk to be illegal in half of the states and illegal to carry over state lines in its final form. Nevertheless, people still actively seek out and consume raw milk because they believe its nutritional values to be greater. Controversies surround this topic on whether organic food
Odwalla had enjoyed 16 years of fame and fotune and reigned king of the freshly squeezed fruit juice drinks up until October 1996 (Melvin, 2011, Pg. 656). There was a massive E-coli outbreak up and down the western part of the United States and western part of Canada which was soon traced back to Odwalla fresh apple juice. Washington state health officials confirmed the link between the E. coli 0157:H7 cases on Novemeber 5th. Odwalla found itself on the brink of a collapse; as the event played itself out, more than 60 people became sick after drinking the juice and a 16 month old child died. Instantly Odwalla’s stock price feel over 30% and sales plummetted by 90%. Just when it could not get any worse, personal injury lawsuits started piling through the door (Baker, 1998).
The 2010 update indicated that 227 tons of newly discovered melamine-contaminated milk powder have been confiscated again. In 2008, a previous nationwide crackdown of 124 tons of contaminated from a dairy farm in Northwest China's Qinghai province and 103 tons by other manufacturers in Hebei, Shanxi, Heilongjiang provinces and Tianjin. In late June 2010, the latest melamine scandal was first discovered in Northwest China's Gansu province. Since then officials have since traced its source to the Dongyuan Dairy Factory, Minhe County, in neighboring Qinghai province. Officials have arrested six suspects and detained another 41 for allegedly participating in the production and distribution of melamine-tainted milk powder. In March 2010, a Shanghai

I learned that drugs and cosmetics often contain chemicals that can be hazardous or have dangerous side effects. For example, a brand of mascara called Lash Lure caused many women to go blind and one woman even died because it contained a chemical that burned the skin when used as directed. After about 100 people died from using a cough syrup called Elixir Sulfanilamide, which was made toxic by its production method, the American public was faced with a decision and it caused our government to pass the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938.
Milk is one of the most nutritionally complete natural foods. It adds high quality proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins to our diet. However, when this milk is handled improperly the bacteria present in milk can multiply and make the raw milk potentially dangerous. Our environment is full of microorganisms that can enter milk during the milking process when the equipment used for milking, transportation and storing milk are not properly cleaned.
Food safety is an increasingly important public health issue. Governments all over the world are intensifying their efforts to improve food safety. Food borne illnesses are diseases, usually either infectious or toxic in nature, caused by agents that enter the body through the ingestion of food. “In industrialized countries, the percentage of people suffering from food borne diseases each year has been reported to be up to 30%. In the United States of America, for example, around 76 million cases of food borne diseases, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths, are estimated to occur each year.” (Geneva 2)
Be careful when we are buying powdered milk, we all want our babies healthy and happy. This article tells us how China’s food safety problem is serious and how toxic the food is. The government should pay more attention to food safety issues. Kids are the future of this world, if they are living in a toxic world, our country is probably becoming nothing. I wish we could eat healthier and live in a better world.
