Medical Marijuana to Treat PTSD in Veterans Cannabis is commonly used around the world to treat a variety of diseases. Although the first traces of the medicinal use of marijuana were found in the Ancient Chinese, recently the legalization of medical marijuana has been a controversial issue in our society. In the past two decades, twenty eight states have legalized medicinal marijuana use for the treatment of certain diseases. Medical marijuana has been proven to help treat many diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, Cancer, Epilepsy, and many more. Regardless,there is still controversy surrounding cannabis use as a primary or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of stress disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The federal government estimates that as many as 500,000 of the 2.7 million troops who served for our country have some level of PTSD. However, there seems to be significant evidence in the fact that the use of medical marijuana has helped a large amount of veterans cope with the symptoms of their PTSD. Also, there is a lot of evidence that shows that marijuana can be used as a safer pain management alternative. Providing a less addictive form of medicine that will not lead to overdoses is extremely important especially because opiate addictions and overdoses are at an all time high. Allowing PTSD to qualify for use of medical marijuana could potentially help so many people. Our veterans fought to keep us safe, the least we can do is do research in order to keep them
