The topic of medical marijuana and recreation marijuana legalization has been around for many decades and the election had four states vote on the issue. California, Nevada, Massachusetts, and Maine are the four states that passed recreational marijuana. Arkansas, Florida, and Alaska passed medical marijuana along with twenty five other states. According to Kevin Loria and Jenifer Welsh from Business Insider, marijuana has many positive effects which are treating glaucoma, help reverse the carcinogenetic effects of tobacco and improve lung health, THC a chemical found in marijuana can slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, and CBD a chemical found in marijuana stops cancer from spreading. A person can treat glaucoma by any of these methods but smoking is the preferred method according to Business Insider. Glaucoma is a condition of increased pressure within the eyeball, causing gradual loss of sight. Business Insider says “Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma. These effects of the drug may slow the progression of the disease, preventing blindness.”(Loria/Welsh) I think that if a person is suffering from this disease, they should be able to receive medical marijuana for treatment. In the states that have not passed medical marijuana consumption, people with glaucoma have to take other medicines that don’t work as well and suffer because of this. Drug Free World thinks that people who use medical marijuana have a greater chance for heart attack and says “a user’s risk of a heart attack could increase fivefold.”(DrugFreeWorld) I understand their point of view but if a person is suffering from glaucoma, they should have the right to the best medicine which appears to be medical marijuana for this …show more content…

Business Insider says “The 2006 study, published in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics, found that THC, the active chemical in marijuana, slows the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that makes them. These plaques are what kill brain cells and cause Alzheimer's.”(Loria/Welsh) To me this means that THC a drug found in marijuana can slow down the Alzheimer’s disease, which gives the patient more time to be with their family. Every extra minute counts to be with a family member, I would do anything to get an extra minute with a family member and if marijuana can do this we need to legalize this drug. Live Science says “ In some cases, reported side effects of THC include elation, anxiety, tachycardia, short-term memory recall issues, sedation, relaxation, pain-relief and many more," said A.J. Fabrizio, a marijuana chemistry expert at Terra Tech Corp, a California agricultural company focused on local farming and medical cannabis.”(Bradford) Bradford makes a good point, but every drug has a side effect and if the benefit is better than the side effect then we should have it
