2) The public today holds a low esteem for our “news media” because most of the news information is biased. There are primarily two elements of news reporting. The first one is the actual news and the second one is the opinions from media experts which is designed to provoke and persuade. According to the “Media Literacy Project”, media is a business that thrives on money from corporations for advertising their products. Like any other business, to sustain profitability it has to please the sponsors, and so its content is influenced to a great extent by these sponsoring organizations. News organizations may shy away from negative stories about corporations because of this binding. Such tie ups with pharmaceutical companies and health organizations …show more content…
is dangerous for the well-being of our citizens. Also there are no well-defined norms governing the news broadcast by different media, which affects the truthfulness of the news. Concentration of media, negatively affects citizens while making crucial decision for a free and functioning democracy.
Because we have fewer agencies it is quite likely that they are not trying to reach out to the masses. This kills healthy competition thereby giving importance to sensationalism, compromising on quality. Today’s media uses persuasion techniques like ‘Explicit Claims’, ‘Slippery slope’ and false ‘Testimonials’ from fake experts. Here are some examples that use “Slippery slope” persuasion: (1) “When your cable company puts you on hold, you get angry. When you get angry, you go blow off steam. When you go blow off steam, accidents happen.” Later, we reach the finale: “You wake up in a roadside ditch. Don’t wake up in a roadside ditch.” – Direct TV. (2) "If the government is allowed to prohibit our freedom of speech the next thing you know we will be shot on sight for questioning the government."(3) "Textbooks and made from paper, paper is made from trees. We need trees for Oxygen. We kill trees. This school is killing us." Some ads create fear and confusion in people’s mind like this one: "After my son had his vaccine, he developed Autism. Therefore the vaccine caused Autism" and this one from 2011 Dodge charger Ad. …show more content…
"Allowing computers to drive cars will bring us to a Matrix-like dystopia." Messages like "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette", misleads people into unhealthy habits.
Another example of false information that used “Fear” as the persuasion technique was the news broadcast by Fox News after 9/11, about Saddam Hussein’s possession of Weapons of mass destruction that resulted in huge loss of lives, time and money, and we are yet to recover from the financial crisis. Some other news of “fear” spread by Fox insisted “All Arabs are Muslims and all Muslims are terrorists” and “Allowing more immigrants will result in unemployment in our country.” When the ‘Zika’ virus caused by mosquitoes was spreading around the world, news agencies ABC, CBS and NBC created lots of fear in people’s mind, by exaggerating the danger of this epidemic but failed mention about the success of using DDT to get rid of mosquitoes. We often see media’s praising CEO’s when they increase the salary for their employees, but negatively portray the “fight for $15” protests around the country. We are seeing media bias everywhere in Election 2016 coverage. More and more people are depending on the internet, which is providing a more level playing field, where people exchange views through blogs and other social
media. But news on the Internet is not always genuine because it is cheaper for websites to buy news than creating their own. Even in cases where media content is not made for profit – such as YouTube videos and Facebook posts – the ways in which content is distributed are nearly always run with profit in mind. We all know that our national debt has crossed the $19 trillion mark. But the time allocated by our media giants to spread this awareness among people and warn our government officials is way less than the coverage time for NCAA basketball tournament. It is time for people to start funding non-profitable channels like Public broadcasting station (PBS) to get non-biased news and a wide variety of education programs.
In Melody Peterson’s “Our Daily Meds” , the history of marketing and advertising in the pharmaceutical industry is explored. The first chapter of the book, entitled “Creating disease”, focuses on how major pharmaceutical companies successfully create new ailments that members of the public believe exist. According to Peterson, the success that these drug manufacturers have experienced can be attributed to the malleability of disease, the use of influencial people to promote new drugs, the marketing behind pills, and the use of media outlets.
“What We are to Advertisers” by James B. Twitchell is a short article that emphasize how advertisement attracts audience magically. From the quote, “ Mass production means mass marketing, and mass marketing means the creation of mass stereotypes” James points out of how the world appear to be. The advertisers seems to be psychologically abuse to the public for them to be successful in their industry. Base on the way the society act, dress and thinks, we fantasize something ridiculous and only our imagination can only make it close to a reality. With that in mind, the industry of advertisements will immediately think of a way to try and sell their product to us.
The media takes a biased approach on the news that they cover, giving their audience an incomplete view of what had actually happened in a story. Most people believe that they are not “being propagandized or being in some way manipulated” into thinking a certain way or hearing certain “truths” told by their favorite media outlets (Greenwald 827). In reality, everyone is susceptible to suggestion as emphasized in the article “Limiting Democracy: The American Media’s World View, and Ours.” The
Media platforms like television and radio primarily spread propaganda created by the government. Citizens spend a lot of time watching television or listening to the radio and it’s a big part of their life. Almost everyone in the city owns a television or radio and believes things they see and hear from them. Montag escapes the police, but the T.V. chase is still playing out because they don’t want people to know that they let a fugitive get away. They found an innocent man on the street, labeled him as Montag, then killed him on the broadcast. “‘They’re faking. You threw them off at the river. They can’t admit it. They know they can hold their audience only so long. The show’s got to have a snap ending, quick!’... ‘The innocent man stood bewildered’… ‘The victim was seized by Hound and camera in a great spidering, clenching grip’” -Granger (Bradsbury 142). Media propaganda is so powerful today because everyone is susceptible to it. The press (newspapers, magazines, and T.V.) uses their tactics to shape people’s opinions. According to Johnnie Manzaria, the press is important because the most current news and info is spread through them everyday. People can believe anything the media says, because they have a popular opinion or reputation. Even if they spread propaganda, some people will inevitably believe it because “the news said so”, and is a very influential resource ("Media's Use of Propaganda to Persuade
At this point the device of propaganda is used through the several ways in order to confirm the lies told. Propaganda is a tool widely used to lure people into believing things that may not always be true- Joseph Stalin used this tactic in various ways to keep his reign on the soviet as does the infamous terrorist group, ISIS; George Orwell

Over seventy percent of Americans believe news is purposely biased(SPJ Code of Ethics). This shows that the people in America know their news is biased and are okay with it. Media bias is hurting the way people view races, religious groups, and certain jobs. Before investigating the situation wholly, people tend to believe what the media is saying which could be a stretch of the truth or even a lie. This essay is about Media Bias and all of the important information surrounding this controversial topic: journalism ethics, the “myth” of liberal media bias, and police department controversy.
Today it seems almost impossible to get a straightforward answer on any major topic from the media. All sources of media have a specific audience that they are intending to hear or view the information that they have prepared, therefore they will cut bits and pieces out so that only the message they are trying to get across will be received. So indeed there is a media bias, and yes it more often than not slants towards the liberal view point, as many reporters and journalists have liberal views themselves.
With information in the hands of these companies and other groups they have turned information into a business. The owners of the research use this to their advantage by buying or selling research and allowing research to be presented in the best way they found fit. This point stood out to me because I see this going on in my life all the time. When I look at Fergusson, the Donald Trump campaign and different news stations, the owners of where the information is coming from I wonder what is the truth. I frequently get confused on what am I supposed to believe and Cynthia points this out to me in detail. If you like it or not the media is affecting us all from the television to ads and she describes how us as American citizens can be deceived accordingly. The scientist however do not necessarily know how their research is being used because they are neutral in this case, the companies are the ones who decide how statistics and facts may be used. Groups who own products such as rice can say how rice can lower cholesterol but will they say the negatives accordingly? Nowadays we see ads everywhere we go and many americans can be
“73% of all Americans believe that fake and biased news is a major problem in the country today” writes Jeffrey M. Jones and Zacc Ritter. Merriam-Webster defines bias as an inclination of temperament or outlook; especially : a personal and sometimes unreasoned judgment : prejudice. News bias and news filtering is a horrible problem in the U.S. and is affecting the way AMericans live their lives and the way they solve problems.
“After President Kennedy’s death in 1963, the television networks aired four days of commercial-free coverage of his funeral, burial, and other proceedings, costing them about $100 million in lost advertising revenue” (“History of Television” 1). From 1963, many things have changed within the news media from ads to the information given. Within the mass media, which is the entire array of organizations through which information is collected and disseminated to the general public, news media emerges towards the light, by provoking the public with new information about subjects of public interest. Ads are beginning to take over approximately 1/3 of news coverage stations, consisting of insurance, exotic trips, weight loss, medication, alcohol,
The elimination of media bias is pretty much impossible due to the fact that large corporations head the media, and the heads of most large corporations are white men, but by the implementation of certain strategies it would be a move in the right direction. Media bias is a problem, though it may not be blatant, it is serious because it could be helping to form people?s beliefs about others. People are scared of the unknown, and by giving them a certain portrayal of someone they have had no interaction with; it can have detrimental effects. Who knows actually what impact media bias has had on the nation as a whole. How do we know whether or not media bias has made an individual not get or even lose a job? How do we know how many friendships media bias has stopped from even being initiated? Hopefully one day we will be able to recognize what media bias is, only then will we be able to begin the process of fighting to put an end to it. Only then will we be able to create a fair, unbiased media that is diverse and one that encompasses the ideas of an ideal media.
Advertising techniques have changed and along with it, the impact they have on each individual’s mind. While there are some similarities between the different kinds of advertisements we see today, there are also many differences. Advertising has also become more unethical than it was in, let’s say, the 50s. Not all advertisements are brainless; there are a few that are even creative and fun and just pull the target audience in by entertaining them while selling them a product.
Fake news is a kind of yellow news coverage that comprises of deliberately portrayed falsehood or deception spread by the means of the conventional print, broadcasting news media, or through Internet-based online networking. Fake news is composed and distributed with the expectation to delude, keeping in mind the end goal to pick up fiscally or politically misrepresented, or patently false headlines that are good enough to gain consideration and grab attention. Fake news uses striking headlines. Sometimes, even an entire story is made up that counts as a fabricated news story with a specific ultimate goal to expand readership and, on account of web based stories, web based sharing and Internet click income. There are certain kinds of “Fake
Everyone watches the news but does that mean we have to trust them? The media is known for giving us verified information that is usually observed and /or proven. Most people get their information about current events from the news media because it would be impossible to gather all the news themselves. Television news is extremely important in the United States because more people get their news from television broadcasts than from any other source. Print media is the oldest form of media but is very significant. It is known for just reporting more than any other source of media. Radio news was the best ways to broadcast news before the television but, people still listen to the radio every day. “If errors regularly occur in a publication, its reputation suffers in threaten the very existence of publication,” said journalist Maximilian Schafer. Nobody wants to read false publication when they deserve the truth. There are several types of media but false news would still get out to the society by one of these Medias. There have situations where the news told the public false information and got away with it.
