It took Odysseus ten years to return home after the war in Troy was over in Homer’s The Odyssey. His own decisions caused him to be delayed in his journey home. Odysseus messed up in three major ways: by not telling his men about the sack of wind, not watching his men on Helios’s island, and taunting polyphemus as he was escaping.
Odysseus and his men were almost back home in Ithaca when they were sent back to Aiolos. Odysseus had received a bag of all the bad winds from Aiolos so Odysseus could have a calm journey home. Odysseus made the mistake of not telling his men what was in the bag. He told them that he would tell them once they reached Ithaca. Odysseus was asleep and his men took this opportunity to open the bag because “there must be gold and silver in the bag”(Homer 120). Odysseus was a smart man and must have known that if he did not tell his men what was in the bag, their curiosity would take over and they would have to open it. If Odysseus was truthful about it from the beginning and told his men, then they could have reached home at that time. However, he didn’t tell his men so they were blown back to Aiolos once they opened the bag. …show more content…

This is especially evident on Helios’s island. Odysseus went to the other side of the island to make sacrifices to the gods. While he was doing this, his men killed and ate the cattle of Helios which angered the god of the sun greatly. Helios went to Zeus and wanted him to punish Odysseus’ men or else he would take the sun away from the world. Zeus was left with no other option but to strike down Odysseus’s men. Odysseus not watching his men and not stressing the importance of not eating the cattle caused all of his men to die, leaving Odysseus the only living person left of the many ships of men that left
