This truly inspiring man, a fellow Bahamian, and a role model to many, Sir. Sydney Poitier once asserted: "I always wanted to be someone better the next day than I was the day before " Poitier, partnered with the late great Maya Angelou had an indelible impact on my character. They were psychologically crucial as I hungered for success, and it kept me resilient amidst all of the failures and mediocrities in my life. I attribute the content of my character to Poitier, and Angelou is the origin for the manifestation of my critical thinking. Albeit, they are just the pillars of my personality. I can divulge, as evidenced by witnessing job incompetence, that there are a number inconspicuous allegiances within the higher social class; i.e., societal nepotism. I will elucidate my point further by saying, it exists everywhere and my qualms do not reside with the existence of such duplicitous proclivities; but, the emergence of formulaic dishonesty. I consider myself a very honest candidate, any university that considers me can expect an outspoken yet composed intellectual. An intellectual who is compliant and adaptable. I have had stratospheric grade point averages and averages that I may want to forget; however, I have always remained honest with myself. Hard work and integrity is absolutely critical to achieve prosperity. Nothing living on this planet can dissuade me from pursuing my dreams. I will never accept dishonest and disrespectful proffers. At this juncture of life, what I need is my future university to observe my moral and primal appetite for success. It is this trait that fuels my ambitions. I may not have obtained my first degree as gracefully and as unmarred as I would've liked; nevertheless, I possess an associate degree, with merit. This autobiography, which covers Maya's life from age 3 to age 16, is often considered a bildungsroman since it is primarily a tale of youth and growing into young adulthood. However, unlike a typical, novel-form bildungsroman, the story does not end with the achievement of adulthood; Angelou continues to write about her life in four other volumes, all addressing her life chronologically from her childhood to the accomplishments of her adulthood. It is important to keep in mind that this is an autobiography, rather than a novel, and that the narrator and the author are indeed one and the same, and the events described in the book are intended to relate a very personal portrait of a person's life.

She was known worldwide for many things. She was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry. She was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She was and still is a woman that people look up to. Many people know her as Maya Angelou.
The inspirational Marguerite Ann Johnson, better known as Ms. Maya Angelo was born on April 4, 1928 to her parents Bailey and Vivian Baxter Johnson. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Maya’s parents soon divorced when she was only three years old, resulting in her and her brother Bailey Johnson Jr. moving and staying with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. (Moore, 1) Young Maya often dreamed about being a pretty little white girl and how she wished her hair was transitioned from her nappy roots to long, silky blonde. Her grandmother however instilled the importance of being proud of your race. Living during this time it was very common to want a better life of course, but this was one of the first known racial encounter Maya faced. Upon moving back to her mother at the age of eight, tragically, Ms. Angelou was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. Revealing her rapist resulted in her uncles taking matters in to their own hands, which also resulted in the death of her mother’s boyfriend. By acknowledging the power of her tongue, this tragic encountered her to go mute for about five years. Maya Angelou's life growing up was not always perfect. Given the birth name of Marguerite Ann Johnson, Maya Angelou was borin in St. Louis, Missouri on April 4th, 1928. Although she was born there, she spent most of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas with her Grandmother, Annie Henderson and in San Fransico, California with her mother. Maya Angelou is still living today and teaches at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. Maya had to deal with many hard things growing up and although it wasn't perfect, she's lead a very eventful life.
The early 1930’s a time where segregation was still an issue in the United States it was especially hard for a young African American girl who is trying to grow and become an independent woman. At this time, many young girls like Maya Angelou grew up wishing they were a white woman with blond hair and blue eyes. That was just the start of Angelou's problems though. In the autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou goes into great depth about her tragic childhood, from moving around to different houses, and running away and having a child at the age of 16. This shows how Maya overcame many struggles as a young girl.
Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. Following their guide, I have always valued and tried to get the most of any educational opportunity I have had. Having grown up in a business family, I have always been interested in focusing my career in the business field. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy. For this reason, I have decided to pursue my studies in the field of Business and Leadership at Marylhurst University. I want to pursue a well-rounded education at this established university where I also can have life experiences in the outside world, which will ultimately help me to become a successful leader in our family business.
I am aware of the hard work involved in acquiring the degree from an institution of international reputation and I am confident of succeeding in the course offered to me at the university.
