The challenge put fourth by the particular group sponsoring this scholarship, as I understand it, is to develop a strategy that would permit one to maximize their return on an investment of $150,000 in cash, “whether it’s in terms of financial profit or personal satisfaction…or both.” Such a broad charge makes it possible for me, and indeed anyone else interested in contemplating such arrangements, to develop novel program guidelines for differing goals. So I will do just that.
I will propose, for the purposes of this assignment, two programs designed to maximize my own personal financial return as well as another specifically designed to benefit the wider community as a whole given the effects of the current recession. My reasons for developing separate plans stems from my contention that the various goals alluded to by the devisors of the 2011 essay topic are fairly distinct. Furthermore, I believe that attempting to reconcile such distinct goals within a single program, which is to say coming up with an idea designed to mutually benefit myself as well as the wider community to a similar extent, would merely weaken its overall impact. So with that in mind, I shall present my ideas on how to maximize my own personal financial return on an investment of $150,000.00. With such a sum of readily available capital, I could simply go about finding some piece of recently foreclosed upon property in a locale relatively untouched by the 2008 subprime meltdown. Though grand in scope and long-term in its layout, I believe that this type of plan would maximize the potential of an initial investment of $150,000.00 to do good in a community. If successful, public awareness would be generated, fiscal priorities would shift, new laws and economic incentives would be created, and homes would be built or refurbished and then occupied by Americans made more economically secure by serious structural reform. I would inform them so that they could assist me and my mission and also so that they could provide me with possible solutions. I would also call the bank and set up an account just for scholarship awards. I would send my team to contact Re/max to scout for buildings with farmland nearby so that we could start working on the first neighborhood center before building the rest of them. Re/Max has been around for over 40 years and is “is a leader in the commercial and investment arenas”. Although it would cost more, I would get it furnished by local small independent businesses. The centers would focus on making the people independent and teaching core values and ethics to make them a more productive part of society. They could grow and tend to the land and feed themselves and the neighborhood. I would get homedepot to help with the gardening supplies, fruit and vegetable seeds, and sheds for the supplies. I would also reach out to Big Brothers and Big Sisters so that neighborhood kids could have good role models to look up to. Therefore, the supply of housing that is affordable and accessible to low income people should be increased. Plus assistance that allows people to reach adequate stability should be regarded as a good investment in a productive society, in order to attain our objective. First we could start by introducing more productive assistance programs that actually focus on helping those in need of housing assistance. These programs will analyze how long people are homeless, what are their needs, the causes of homelessness, and in all how many are currently without a home. Subsequently, the City of Austin would begin building affordable housing according to the amount necessary.
To achieve the American dream is a great accomplishment that requires financial adequacy. Due to financial insufficiencies, owning a home can be difficult, if not impossible for many individuals of lower income. Economic fluctuations often cause inconsistency in housing prices and availability.3 The price of a home correlates to the cost and availability of materials, needed manpower and the duration of construction. These logistical obstacles need to be overcome if the American dream is to be attained by the majority.4 To engineer a faster, more cost effective means of production is a challenge, but for the solution to be well designed and well crafted is a far greater task.
Throughout my research I found there is a real cry out for action on providing more affordable house not just locally but throughout the country. There needs to be more funding available to build more gear to income or subsidized housing and all levels of government need to take action.
“How the Crash Will Reshape America” explored many solutions such as transforming small towns into larger cities, utilizing the town and the residential areas that border them more wisely and choosing the leading cities that are declining in business, housing and industry to expand them by making them more appealing to new professionals that are not yet established with a steady job or those who are established but looking to expand and save. Although jobs would be created, the first step and most plausible solution would be to build more new homes in towns where the housing market would increase in order to attract people and future businesses. This solution would encourage growth in different aspects such as new homes or businesses, which then in turn would lead to more jobs in order to build these constructions and correspondingly jobs would be available in the new businesses that were created (Florida, 2009).
Terner presents the beginning of a solution to the affordable housing problem in his article Affordable Housing: An Impossible Dream? in The Commonwealth, published June 1994. His company founded from an anonymous $600,000 donation is a non-profit organization that builds quality, affordable housing for low-income families. Its effects, however, are limited. One project just opened in San Francisco with 3,000 applicants and 108 acceptances, which can be looked at as pretty dismal statistics. “This is just a drop in the bucket,” writes Terner, ‘the real question is how to expand and replicate.” (Terner, p. 392) It is this expansion that the bulk of the article argues for. Terner values a fair chance for all citizens at the “American Dream” and this chance involves the whole community. Terner mentions the “NIMBY” syndrome, or Not-In-My-Back-Yard Syndrome, where communities support the concept of affordable housing, but none that are to be built in their community. In order to implement this project we will need to schedule a meeting with Housing and Urban Development. We will also need to create a plan of action surrounding the proposed activities. We could create action teams in order to assign person’s tasks. We will need to formulate a goal plan with obtainable goals. We will also have to find an area of development and create a projected budget. It would be beneficial to contact agencies for assistance. Create a timeline for tasks to be developed. Lastly, we can conduct seminars on the importance of affordable housing. An accurate cost analysis is the first step in an effort to finance and implement this proposed project. By building a housing complex for single mothers with children who have low-income, this will allow them to have access to affordable housing. To help determine the effectiveness of the program and to ensure that the projected goals are reached Shaw University social work students will collectively conduct tenant satisfaction surveys and also interview tenants prior to receiving assistance form the housing program. After tenants have received assistance data will then be collected using the same methods as before. Tenants will be expected to take a survey on what they expect from the housing program.

I also feel that these plans can be a major part in developing a better economy and society for the “slum” and middle class communities. It will uplift many neighborhoods and people and to show that we can do something about this problem. In addition, the new scope on combating crime also projected many policy implications as the conservative theory is applied to the criminal justice system today. Across the board, the conservative theory holds true to “get tough on crime” as it called to hire more law enforcement officers throughout the nation. Eventually this would lead the government and local law enforcement agencies to increase their force not only in personnel but also in equipment and other necessary items that are essential to each law enforcement officer. Simply put, it would cost the agencies more money due to the combating crime rates with more arrests. In addition, this would also lead to the increase and hiring of more judges/magistrates, prison guards, prisons, and essential staffing within the criminal justice system. According to Lilly, Cullen, and Ball (2015), “the financial burdens of prison during the fiscally tight times of the 1980s furnished ample motivation to search for alternative methods of social control. Still, in turning to community corrections, conservatives brought a distinctive look” (p. 345). Interesting enough, the rise of the criminal justice services throughout the nation continued to build, as agencies got tough on crime, however, the taxes and financial burdens are felt even two decades later. Overall the influence of getting tough on crime/ the conservative movement focused on the individual motives as the cause for crime. As the focus narrowed, the policies that were implemented created positive and negative impacts on society. If such polices continued to strive for more policing into the twenty-first century and continued to dawn the extreme “get tough on crime” lens then taxes and financial issues would grow out of control. To that end, the United States continues to feel the effect of the conservative movement in the 1980s

Never have I ever climbed a mountain peak. As a child, I imagined myself conducting expeditions in deep-frozen pathways, leading amateur explorers to the top of the world, and instructing rookies in surviving harsh blizzards. Even though slightly altered, my childhood dream has been achieved. I led a team of fellow classmates, in my Strategic Management course, to the success summit of a financial competition. Over the course of a semester, I and my teammates were supposed to create and manage a company of the IT industry, in a computer-simulated environment, along with other four rival teams. I dealt with strategy and financial matters of our virtual enterprise, while my colleagues were working on marketing and manufacturing. During the four months of the exercise, I have experienced finance from various aspects: capital budgeting, through selecting favorable investment for upcoming quarters; debt management, by assessing the necessary amount and efficiency of loans; profitability analysis and dividend policy, which had been used to compile the company’s general performance index. Working in a multinational team, which included an American, a Norwegian and a Moldovan, strengthen my negotiations skills, as well as flexibility and cooperation. But above all, this experience intensified my passion for finance. Of course, a pleasant bonus was the fact that, in the end, our company’s financial performance was six times the performance of second-best team.
