Endangered is when there is very little of a species and they could easily become extinct. Extinct is when there is no more of that species left on earth. There are 16 endangered whale and dolphin species. Some are more endangered than most like the maui dolphin. Dolphins are endangered because they get caught in fishing line, are killed for food, and their habitat is contaminated by oil spills.
The maui dolphin is very endangered and if we don't help it in the next year or two they could be extinct. There are exactly 55 maui dolphins left this year and there were around 21,000 in the 1970’s. Maui dolphins are not the only type of dolphins that are endangered. There are a variety of different endangered dolphin species. The maui dolphin is the most endangered right along with the hector dolphin. We need to raise awareness about dolphins because we don't want them to become extinct to become extinct like the yangtze river dolphin. The Yangtze River Dolphin was a freshwater dolphin that went extinct 12 years ago (Stephen Lovgren). To me this is a tragedy because that was around

the time that i was born and it makes me sad. If other dolphin species. This could cause another hole in our ecosystem which could could cause major problems. One thing that happens to dolphins is they get caught in fishing line.
If you’ve ever seen dolphin tales you know that the dolphin winter was found washed up on shore with net wrapped around her. This movie was based on a real story about a real dolphin and to know that this happens often makes me want to help stop this from happening. ”Most people love animals but a lot of things we do as humans are not good for other species”(Margaret Mittelbach). This shows that when we are fishing we need to be careful because the fishing line breaks, if the fishing line breaks it sits in the water and it the animals in the ocean not only the dolphin are affected by that. “Gill nets are used to fish in coastal waters where these dolphins live. Dolphins, seabirds and other endangered marine mammals get tangled in these nets and drown” ( Forest ). This shows that not only the dolphins are getting
hurt. In Japan dolphins are a food source. “It’s Friday in Taiji and another pod of dolphins has been driven into the killing cove. It was just last weekend that the world watched in shock as over 200 dolphins awaited their fate there” (Karen Dawn). This is important because it shows how dolphins, which are endangered, are being killed in large amounts because Japan is so costume to eating that animal. “Live dolphins sold locally bring many tens of thousands of dollars each. Sold internationally, they can each command over $100,000” (Karen Dawn). This shows that dolphins are not just a food source in Japan but also have economic value to Japan. If we don’t put a stop to Japan's dolphin hunting business we can help the dolphin species thrive. The last cause of the dolphins endangerment is oil spills. Dolphins living in the Gulf of Mexico were heavily impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill (Ker Than). This shows that oil spills can hurt animals. This oil spill impacted the dolphins because it made them sick and they died because of it. According to an article from National Geographic, “About 30 dolphins in Barataria Bay were caught, examined and released.” The article continues, “The researchers concluded that many of the dolphins suffered from moderate to severe lung disease associated with oil contamination” (Ker Than). This is important because we caused the dolphins to become sick and so because of us, the dolphins are at risk of dying. If dolphins go extinct they could cause a fall in the underwater ecosystem. First, the fish that the dolphins eat will overpopulate. When the fish over populate they will start to eat their prey and cause them to go extinct (Emma S) . This is important because if the fishes prey goes extinct then the fish eggs won't have anything to eat and starve and also die off. Also if the dolphins die of predators of the dolphin will become endangered because they no longer have that food source. This matters because if they have nothing to eat they could potentially starve and go extinct, then the whole ecosystem will fail. Dolphins are endangered because they get caught in fishing line, are killed for food, and their habitat is contaminated by oil spills. We can fix these problems by being more careful when we go fishing so that out fishing line doesn't break and not leaving fishing net in the water, stop killing the dolphins for our own benefit, and we need to be more careful when we are moving oil across the ocean.
Seaworld is a giant marine life theme park. The greatest attraction to these many theme park would be those killer whales. In fact, these killer whales are the face of the park. As gigant as these mammals are, seaworld is keeping them in some pretty tight quarters. Mr. Jett and Mr.Ventre says “Wild killer whales can swim a hundred miles daily as they socialize, forage, communicate, and breed. In stark contrast, with little horizontal or vertical space in their enclosures, captive orcas swim only limited distances, with most spending many hours surface resting.” The animals don't have the freedom they need. Also when taking the whales out of their natural habit the whales tend to be depressed and not as heath in that situation. They need their freedom in the big ocean blue. Bring them into the small living units, breeding whales in captivity all for the entertainment of humans. At young ages the calves are taken away from their mothers on to a new seaworld park. Mothers of the calves have even been seen denying their offspring.
Shark nets have been implemented in locations across the world in response to shark sightings and attacks. Nets are submerged beneath the surface of the water, roughly 200 metres from the shoreline. The meshing is designed to be large to capture sharks, leaving them to struggle before eventually drowning under the weight of their own body. The meshing allows small fish to pass through, however captures larger fish and marine species. Shark nets provide no discrimination between common, vulnerable and endangered species, resulting in a high mortality rate for a variety of marine wildlife.
In the past twenty years a large amount of bottlenose dolphin have been killed due to the tuna fishery. In the Eastern Pacific swim large schools of tuna, these shoals tend to be under herds of dolphins, for some unexplained reason. Because of this, fishermen can easily find schools of tuna. The tuna are being caught under purse seine nets, which encircles the shoals of tuna and then is pulled back on board the fishing vessel, catching both tuna and dolphin. Initially the mortality rate was 500,000 each year for dolphins alone. Although some efforts are made to encourage the dolphins to leave the net by backing down part of the net, which allows the dolphins to escape, there are still a large number of mortalities (Bryant). On the other hand, in the last few years there has been dramatic progress in stopping the fishing industries from using purse sine nets. It has been found that dolphins are in immediate danger of extinction if these fishing techniques don’t stop.
Yet these people do not stop to consider what is going on behind the scenes when they are watching the dolphins and whales swim and dive through the water with their trainers. If one were to approach a trainer and ask about the abuse that these animals suffer every day in order for them to perform their shows and tricks, the trainer would say that it is an educational and necessary aspect to keep the animals in captivity. They would also defend these abusive acts by speaking of the information they are gaining of the animals and how they can use this information to help those in the wild. This is due to their own ignorance that they would say such terrible things about these intelligent yet helpless animals. These animals endure much more torture in captivity than most people would like to admit to themselves. Furthermore, the “facts” that the trainers tell the visitors of SeaWorld are untrue. For example, as one sees in the movie Blackfish, the trainers do not give accurate facts regarding life span in and out of captivity as well as the percentage of the collapsed fins
Your viewpoint on killer whales is forever changed. These are the kinds of situations that should and could be prevented. According to Sally Kestin of the Sun-Sentinel, mammals actually live longer in the wild than in aquariums. There is a problem with keeping marine mammals in captivity because of Tilikum’s attack on trainers, other various attacks, how the orca industry started and the psychological effects of captivity. The problem could be solved by using sea pens and making more laws protecting marine mammals.
Hawaiian monk seals, Neo Monachus schauinslandi, are no ordinary species. They are Hawaii’s state mammal and are currently endangered. The Hawaiian Monk seal is rare because of many factors, which include overhunting, getting trapped in fishing nets, and overhunting of their favorite food, lobsters. Because of their rarity, the Hawaiian Monk Seal is a main attraction to tourists all over the world. Found in Hawaii, this monk seal is one of the two species left of the ancient seals. Grouped into the earless seal category, the Hawaiian Monk seal has two other cousins, the Caribbean Monk Seal (extinct), and the Mediterranean Monk Seal (critically endangered). The Hawaiian Monk Seal has a lifespan of 25-30 years, weighs 500-600lbs,
I chose dolphins because they are such elegant creatures, even though wild dolphins are often dangerous. Dolphins are my favorite creatures in the world, and people ought to respect them more.

The Bottle-nosed Dolphin is the most studied and generally the best-known species of dolphin. Bottle-nosed dolphins are classified "Tursiops truncates" in scientific name, and belong to the family Delphinidae, in the suborder Odontoceti, order Cetacea.
The hourglass dolphin (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) is a pelagic marine dolphin which is circumpolar in the southern in both Antarctic and subantartic waters, from about 45°S to 60°S. (William F. Perrin, 2008). There is not enough data to determine with certainty the specific characteristics and traits of these species; as less than 20 specimens have been measured (Thomas A. Jefferson, 2015); however, from observation and sightings in is known that hourglass dolphins (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) tends to travel in groups, with a school size ranged between 1 and 60 animals, with a mean of 7 animals. (William F. Perrin, 2008). Like many other dolphins of the same family (Delphinidae) the hourglass dolphin (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) depend upon echolocation for prey localisation and orientation. Echolocation is the detection of an object by means of reflected sound (Allaby, 2014). Hourglass dolphins (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) produce echolocation click of high source level, which enable them to detect prey at more that twice the distance compared to the Hector
The latest animal rights issue to hit the public is a whale of a controversy. For decades, the public has enjoyed visiting SeaWorld and taking in mesmerizing displays of aquatic performance by orcas, the largest species of dolphins, and their trainers. Recent events have stirred up a media uproar over the safety of these creatures and their trainers. Much of what the public knows about the maltreatment of these creatures comes from a documentary released in 2013 called “Blackfish”. The breeding and captivity of killer whales for entertainment purposes poses a threat not only to the whales, but also the trainers who interact with them.
The Cove is a film of activism, a film meant to move the hearts of individuals who love and support the rights of mammalian sea-dwellers like that of whales, porpoises, and most importantly dolphins. Produced in 2009 by the Oceanic Preservation Society it offers a unique perspective, when compared with other activist documentaries. In The Cove the producer and co-founder of the Oceanic Preservation Society was actually personally involved in the filming efforts and worked directly with dolphin trainer Richard O’Barry in drawing light on the events occurring in a private cove in the city of Taiji, Japan. The documentary is, of course, very biased towards the topic, with obvious pro-animal rights leanings supported indirectly with a strong utilitarian basis. When analyzing documentaries such as this it is vitally important to take as objective a perspective as possible, though humanity tends to be innately prone to bias, and scrutinize through perspectives that have established ethical guidelines.
Did you know in the world there are more than 90 species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises? (WDC) The dolphin is a very important animal to the ocean and there are many different types to discover. In order to learn about dolphins, it is important to discuss where they live, their appearance, and what they eat. Some helpful words to understand are “dorsal fin”, a dorsal fin is the top pointed fin on the dolphins back, “flippers”, a flipper is a flat fin that dolphins use to swim, and “echolocation” is a tool dolphins use to find food by sounds bouncing off of objects (dictionary.com).
In the world today there are about five thousand endangered species. Around one specie dies out every year. Some animals become endangered because people are killing them for their horns, as in the case of the Black Rhino of Africa. Others become extinct because pesticides are put on the food we eat, causing the animals that eat the insects off the plant to become contaminated, which causes their predators to become contaminated, which often affects the shell of that organism?s egg. Here is a list of the endangered species, 91 endangered birds, 76 endangered mammals, 36 endangered reptiles, 21 endangered amphibians, 115 endangered fish, 70 endangered clams, 35 endangered snails, 44 endangered insects, 12 endangered arachnids, 21 endangered crustaceans, 594 endangered flowering plants.
In our world today we have approximately 26,021 endangered species. Endangered species are organisms that may possible become extinct. The term 'endangered species' refers to all species that fits this description. However some conservation biologists and scientists normally use the term ‘endangered species’ to refer to species that are put on the IUCN(International Union for Conservation of Nature)Red List. Many factors can be looked at when considering the conservation status of a species. Factors such as human threats or environmental threats can cause a species to become endangered.
