In the world today there are about five thousand endangered species. Around one specie dies out every year. Some animals become endangered because people are killing them for their horns, as in the case of the Black Rhino of Africa. Others become extinct because pesticides are put on the food we eat, causing the animals that eat the insects off the plant to become contaminated, which causes their predators to become contaminated, which often affects the shell of that organism?s egg. Here is a list of the endangered species, 91 endangered birds, 76 endangered mammals, 36 endangered reptiles, 21 endangered amphibians, 115 endangered fish, 70 endangered clams, 35 endangered snails, 44 endangered insects, 12 endangered arachnids, 21 endangered crustaceans, 594 endangered flowering plants. Some main causes of Endangerment are habitat loss, pollution, hunting, competition from non-native plants and animals, plant collecting, logging, clearing forests, and trading animal parts. The growing population also causes some effect because man cause most problems. Diseases or viruses are al...
Disease, pollution, and limited distribution are factors that threaten various plant and animal species. Also, if the current rate of forest loss continues, huge quantities of plant and animal species will disappear.
Habitat destruction, deforestation, ozone depletion, global warming, and poaching. These actions and ecological happenings are creating a world where animals are going extinct at rapid rates. Our world is on the brink of what scientists believe is the sixth mass extinction. Unlike the five previous mass extinction, the latest one killing a majority of the dinosaurs, the main causes for this current extinction are anthropogenic reasons, not natural events.
The Endangered Species Act Introduction: Long-term survival of a species depends on its ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions (Murphy, 1994). Genetic diversity within a species, which has taken 3.5 billion years to evolve, makes adaptations to these changing environments possible. Unfortunately, the rate of extinction of genetically diverse organisms is rapidly increasing, thus reducing this needed biodiversity, largely due to the human impacts of development and expansion. What was an average of one extinction per year before is now one extinction per hour and extinct species numbers are expected to reach approximately one million by the year 2000 (WWW site, Bio 65). As a result governmental and societal action must be taken immediately!
For instance, an increase in endangered species can lead to a decrease in biodiversity, which allows the invasive species to take over the environment with ease. Letting an invasive species population get out of control can lead to the destruction of an ecosystem and in almost no time at all, an ecosytem can be overrun with an invasive species because they don’t have many predators in this new environment to control their populations. With a new environment to adapt to, invasive species consume a wide variety of organisms because they are all available to them. A well known law in ecology, Competitive Exclusion, states that no two species can occupy the same lifestyle and resources. This means that invasive species out compete natives for their resources because they have few limiting factors on their population, which is why the native species are sometimes killed off. On one occasion, people tried to import the cane toad to Australia as pest control, but the toads killed everything in sight and their populations spread. Insects and bird eggs are in danger, even many potential predators were killed because the toads are poisonous to consume (Spotts). Countless defenseless animals are in danger because of instances like this and should be considered when making desicions to transport
of species due to a variety of causes. Included is out competition, depletion of resources
In addition to habitat destruction, other human-caused problems are also threatening many species. These include issues associated with climate change, pollution, and over-population. Global Warming Another major cause of extinction is global warming.
Humans are destructive. Not a lot of us think about how what we do affects the world around us. We almost act like we are the only ones on this planet. We go around polluting and destroying our world with no regard for our actions. The things that live out in the wild are paying the price for it. Every day that passes there is another animal or plant that is placed on an endangered list. This is happening at an alarming rate. Because of man’s desire to expand and conquer their surroundings, there are animals and plants that are on the brink of extinction that will not be around for our kids and future generations to enjoy if something is not done about it now. This problem has been going on for hundreds of years. There are animals and plants that can only been seen in paintings or early photography. It is because of our early ancestors that we have this problem today and we have to do more to prevent more animals and plants from disappearing forever.
There are about 8.7 million species in the world, yet with industrialization we are pushing animals out of their natural habitat in order to make room for ours. In fact, 85% of endangered species are threatened because of our rapid expansion in many different areas around the world. Pollution, deforestation, overconsumption, urban development, tourism, and agriculture are just some of the examples from this issue.
⅕ of all extinct animal are due solely to invasive species. European Environment Agency estimates that the economic losses caused by biological invasions amount to 12 billion euro (2,487,740,000 dollars) EACH YEAR!! “They may be bigger and more aggressive than local species, so they take a larger share of any available food.” Some can also affect humans. They can harm other animals, which humans need to survive.
How would u feel if someone came in your neighborhood and destroyed your homes? So how would you expect the Sumatran orangutans to feel?
Consider your favorite animal in the neighborhood you live in; now imagine that species going extinct because a foreign predator is pushing it away from any resources and enjoying it as an evening snack. This type of foreign predator is known as an invasive species. These types of attacks on an ecosystem or species, that can lead to extinction or destruction, are harmful to the environment, economy, or human health. These unfortunate turn of events for an ecosystem and what lies within it are occurring today and much too often. More and more species are endangered each year and more and more ecosystems are being damaged daily.
According to World WildLife Fund, many ecosystems around the world are being destroyed, eliminating many plant and animal species that inhabit them (“Pollution”).
To become endangered means that a species is on the verge of becoming extinct. When the species is actually extinct, there are no more of them on the entire planet (wonderopolis.org). The two main causes behind this is due to the species either losing their habitat or from genetic variation (nationalgeographic.org).
We as people are some of many reasons animals become endangered. Natural habitats are ruined because of human activities such as construction work, the extension of agricultural work, destruction of forests, etc. which results in bad effects in animal’s habitat, food cycle, reproduction progress and climate. They don’t have any further vegetation which causes them to Land for cultivation is extended due to the population growth. Various types of development and construction work are continuing. Similarly, settlement areas are expanding and urbanization is taking place. Grazing land is declining in size which is the reason these animals have less and less vegetation and as we produce more for us. Natural disasters also impact on wildlife. The ecosystem is destroyed due to forest fire, destruction of forests, use of insecticides and pesticides, etc. An aquatic ecosystems are ruined when construction work is done and also by explosions due to mining and other reconstruction. Animals living both on the land and water are affected. There will be the lack of habitat for the animals. Human shouldn’t degrade the ecosystem. We shouldn’t placeharmful things like rubbish, insecticides, etc. directly to water sources. When we protect the ecosystem, it helps to protect the biodiversity so it’s not something
Have you ever wondered how many plant and animal species are threatened by extinction? In an article of an issue of the Discovery Education magazine it stated “To date 16,928 plant and animal species are believed to be threatened with extinction.” (Extinction Facts) That is an enormous number and with the constant growing and changing world that number will only increase. Based on all the environmental factors placed on animals, the extinction of untamed animals is inevitable but, steps should be taken to preserve the remains of untamed animals so that scientific research can be conducted. Environmental factors such as deforestation, global warming, and evolution are placed upon animals and are major causes of untamed animals becoming endangered or extinct.
