At the start of Ursula Le Guin 's novel “The Dispossessed”, Shevek finds himself in the market for a new suit to fit in with the capitalist society of Urras. His search introduces him to a world of excessive fashions for every occasion- some more necessary than others- and people eager to spend all of their income just to keep up with the trends. Anarchy could solve this societal sickness. It 's all in the name; anarchy would be the absence of hierarchy. Materialism at its core is provoked by class struggles. If social and economic classes ceased to exist, so would competition with material possessions. The blaring issue I see, though, is with the reception of such a shift. People may be resistant to the thought of their fortune or social status not mattering anymore, even if it did mean nobody else would have to go without. Such is a side effect of privilege. Materialism is an unfortunate product of living in a post-modern society, fueled by our need to cement our own identities after fulfilling other basic needs. However, when this is done at the expense of those who are deprived of basic necessities, materialism becomes a sickening issue. While anarchy could be an effective solution, it would be difficult to implement an anarchist system in order to change our society because this would jeopardize many of the cultural and economic freedoms that many are not willing to
