Today we live in a society where mass media is considered to be the most important aspect of our daily life. However, as much as mass media plays an important role in our society, it also causes some serious problems within our society, it also seem to blind people from the truth and instead make people confuse and bring misunderstanding in the mind of people. Today mass media is everywhere; it is in form of Radio, television, magazines, the internet, advertisements, and newspapers and more recent we even see it in Facebook and Twitter which seems to take over the world now.
With the rise of Mass media, racism seems to rise as well; people now use the internet to mask themselves behind the screen so they can express their feelings or thoughts about someone’s culture, what they are wearing, eating and even race. People today and as it has also been seems to have a problem about the way someone looks like whether you are black, white, Asian, Caucasian or whatever race you want to distinguish yourself as, racism will somehow hunt you.
Racism in not something that just started recently, for hundreds and thousands of years the white man came not only in Africa but all over the world to try to concur and own other race by making them work as slaves, because they thought there race was far more superior.
Today in American TV, “Mass media have played and will continue to play a crucial role in the way white Americans perceive African-Americans” (Stephen Balkaran) because the media seem to focus “on crime, drug use, gang violence, and other forms of anti-social behaviour among African-Americans”. As a result the media as manage to change the viewer’s perspective of African-Americans. Not only in America but around the world, America b...

...owever, it’s your choice, you can just try to suck it up and deal with the fact that you have to share this planet with people that you dislike, or you can try to express yourself verbally to a black guy and I you $100 that somehow at the end of the day you’ll end up on a hospital bed, Why? Well simply because no one likes to be discriminated against. The point I am trying to make is that, Whatever God you believe in We come from the same one, we all bleed the same colour of blood, we all have the same organs, what makes us different from one another is our complexion, we can also try to learn to live together as one species or we can just seat and watch history repeat itself.
One of my favourite quotes from the movie 2012 is “The moment we stop fighting for each other, that’s the moment we lose our humanity”. We all have different ways of understanding this quote.
Let’s begin with racism, which dates back to as far as humans can remember. “It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another -- or the belief that another person is less than human -- because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes” One of the most known acts of racism was the enslavement of Africans in the new world. This racism was a result of the racist belief that black Africans were less human than white Europeans.
Racism can be traced back many years, and despite what many believe, it is still a prominent issue. Racism is when people discriminate others because of the color of their skin. Some people are racist on purpose, but there are times when they do it subconsciously. Everything in this world has a beginning, and racism started with the belief that people of color were inferior to those that weren’t. This belief spread throughout America as it was passed down from generation to generation. Racism seems to be a characteristic of being human. When we are introduced to a new face our mind automatically categorizes people based off of their physical appearance. When people don’t meet certain standards set by others, there becomes a divide between them
The mass media are undoubtedly one of the most popular platforms through which people are able to learn about what is happening around them and across the globe (Woodrow and Reimer, 2014). This communication tool has managed to change the manner in which people receive and sieve information as well as disseminate it to others. In as much as the benefits of the mass media are numerous, its disastrous consequences cannot be ignored. In Canada, television is one of the most common outlets of media stations and it is used to air both local and international programming.
Racism has always been around, from the start of humanity people have always been discriminating or fearing people with a difference race or skin colour. But this was increased a lot when slave traders took more than 12 million Africans by force and travelled by boat to work in North and South America. Throughout the duration of this trip
Not only is it in main stream media, but black entertainment is also posing an issue. The media’s incessant battering of the African American consciousness is deliberately adulterating their feeling of cultural cohesion, shaping the fiber of self-hatred, and producing...
The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.
Racism is not just a fashion that came and will go away. No, we have known the existence of racism since way back in the time. When people had no school attendance, the mothers stayed at home, and the husbands went to work and came home in the evening. The time when countries were taken over by others with force and power. Remember slavery? The horrible time when the «white man» bashed on earth. At that time Africa was a developing country and they still are, and because they thought that a black man was the devils work, they used them as slaves. Can you do that because you are different from them?
Racism is a topic that several do not like to discuss due many different scenarios. People, cultures, and beliefs have been torture¬d from past events. Individuals, young and old, within today’s society have experienced racism in some shape or form. The subject of racism is something that people view differently. There are some who view it as okay, and those who are against it. The beginning of racism began during the time of the ancient civilizations which lead to events that caused short term effects such as the depression of those hurt by the September 11, 2001 attacks, and long term effects like Jewish mistreatment. The explanation of while different events happened are hard to come about, although an idea of the reasoning comes down to scientific racism.
How mass media is using both Ideology and Popular Culture to develop societal expectations and social identities. This essay will look at how Ideology, Hegemony, and Popular Cultural Theory shape common values and expectations of society and media’s influence and compare and contrast differing approaches to understanding the relationship between media and society. The definition of mass media is “a means of communication that reaches large numbers of people in a short time, this can consist of the use of television, newspapers, magazine, and radio”, and within the last decade the internet as well. (HarperCollins) The media can actually be a minor or major effect on individuals depending on how or what their view is on the particular subject or matter. The effects it plays on individuals and societies will depend on the exposure to the subject matter at the time, but it effects all ages from young to old.
The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
