“I have often said that the lure of flying is the lure of beauty.” - Amelia Earhart. The airport of Mason City is located on the north side of highway 18.
The Mason City Municipal airport has lots of history. Building it, how everything changed, commercial flight itself, and it’s got some extra cool stuff hidden throughout its time.
How the airport came to be established was quite a roller coaster. First, an inventor Floyd Barlow of Clear Lake made the first Cerro Gordo county resident round-trip flight from CL to MC in 1913. Then, according to the Mason City Airport Commission, later in 1926 a group of men brought the idea of building an airport to Commerce. The interest rate of building it was up and down. It was built on the south side of highway 18 in August of 1927. It was relocated to the north side of highway 18 in 1933.
The difference between the airport when it was first built is not drastic, but many things have upgraded. Fly.mcw.com said when the

Some widely known about, some not so much. One that’s probably most known about the airport is that Buddy Holly and the Crickets took off from there before they crashed. With pilot Roger Peterson, the plane crashed in field north Clear Lake(flymcw.com). One less popular one is that the first official flight in Mason City was in 1911 as stated by iagenweb.org. June 25-26, 2015 was the first airshow held at our airport since 1996. The airshow shows off different WW planes, with a firework show and interactives according to mcwairshow.com. Did you know that not one but two aviation role models have come to the airport? Charles Lindberg came to the dedication ceremony of the new airport in 1927. Amelia Earhart also came to the building in 1933 to speak about her solo across the Atlantic. My personal favorite, there was a time capsule buried in 1996 at the site of the airport that will be dug up in
Tom Wolfe explains that a career in flying was like climbing one of those ancient Babylonian pyramids made up of a dizzy progression of steps and ledges, a ziggurat, a pyramid extraordinary high and steep; and the idea was to prove at every foot of the way up that pyramid that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff and could move hig...

Denver already had a functioning airport with Stapleton and increased only in space but no technology with the construction of the Denver International airport. Consequently, this brings questions as to why there was a need for a new airport in the first place. The runways have been laid out to resemble
There are many amazing restaurants around the area with some of the best country food you can find. Pigeon Forge is also known for its vast amount of Ripley's Believe it or Not museums. There is also a place in Pigeon Forge which is one of my favorite places called the AppleBarn, where you can buy many fresh apple products. Pigeon Forge is also known for its vast amount of Ripley's Believe it or Not museums. If you're an outdoor enthusiast you'll love The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, hiking and horseback riding.(Pigeon Forge, TN) Although there are many things to do in the mountains around Pigeon Forge, most of the action happens on the main strip where most of the high class restaurants are as well as most of the tourist attractions. Since the town is a tourist town, this also means that there is always new and exciting business opportunities. In a small town it is very hard to start a new business because in most small towns everyone knows each other and won't spend money on a businesses which is not a locally historic businesses. In a larger town with a constantly changing crowd, anyone has the opportunity to grow as a new
The Albany Airport has been around since 1908 when it was on a field in Loudonville Road. .In 1909 the airport was moved to Westerlo Island which was located in Albany, but at the time was the town of Bethlehem. At the time it was named Quentin Roosevelt Memorial Field, after Teddy Roosevelt’s son Quentin. Quentin was a World War One pilot who was shot down in combat. He fought with france, but was shot down by the germans on July 10, 1918. In honor of Roosevelt’s youngest son the airport was named after him.On 1928 Mayor John Boyd Thacher the second decided to build a modern airport on a Shaker site on 737 Albany-Shaker Road. This is where the airport stays today and on June 1,1928 the Albany Airport was opened for mail going west and on October 1, 1928 the airport was opened for mail and passengers going from Montreal to Albany to Newark and return. Since the airport has first started in 1908 it has had many famous people travel through the airport. Charles A. Lindbergh landed his “Spirit of St.Louis” at Quentin R...
“All told, there is over 6 million square feet of public space at DIA. The airport brags that they have room to build another terminal and two more concourses and could serve 100 million passengers a year. The airport flew 50.5 million in 2008” (Anomalies Unlimited 3). There is no need for that much room in any one airport especially when they are only flying half as many as th...
Wouldn’t it be amazing to travel anywhere you wanted to go in the world without a plane to take you there? Well, we’ve all wanted the ability to fly at least once in our lifetime. We would have the luxury to travel anywhere we wanted and we wouldn’t have to worry about the constant struggle to find enough money just to get to the destination. We would learn more about the world by seeing things through a new perspective if we could fly ourselves to it in the blink of an eye. Judith Oritz Cofer as the author shows us this ability through the characters in the short story, “Volar”.

...esides the possible bad food. Pigeon Forge has a common problem each year, the massive amounts of traffic. It is nearly impossible to get anywhere during the tourist season. The city has been working on the roads though. Hopefully this will resolve the traffic problem. Also it is kind of difficult to find a parking place if you just want to get out of your car and walk through Pigeon Forge.
The beginning of the FAM program can be attributed to one singular event. On May 1st 1961 an event would take place that would change the way the US would approach aviation security forever. “The flight for National Airlines was prepared for departure from Miami International Airport t...
There is a distinct lack of shadiness like many other tourist attractions vying to exploit history, instead a beautiful and respectful coverage of the turmoil of America during the 1860s. I was deeply moved by the experience, and the opportunity to walk along the fields where thousands of Americans lost their lives was heart-wrenching. The Civil War should be remembered as more than a one-dimensional battle of right vs wrong, and instead a complex series of human mistrials and emotions, with Gettysburg at the focal
My visit to this Museum got my skin with goose bumps from the excitement of entering an awesome place that has lots of history, information, and exhibits from my culture and roots. I was enjoying every moment by walking around all those displays, and seeing how everything started here on this side of the border.

The United States of America is a country blessed with one of the most advanced airport systems in the world. Comprised of almost 20,000 airfields ranging from public use to private military instillations, this complex airport system is vital to the success of our aviation industry. There are many different types of airports in this system. Each plays a different but vital role with their varying functions. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) organizes airfields into different categories. Three most popular types of airfields that you can find today include commercial service airports, reliever airports, and general aviation airports. Each type has distinct characteristics and criteria that need to be met to fall into their respective categories. Even though their roles differ and are comprised of varying facilities, users, workers, and regulations each has an important place in the national airport system.
