Mary Richmond and Jane Addams were two historic social workers that were known for their great work in the history of social work profession. They gravitated their focus on real world social problems. Which in today’s era social workers of today, also gravitas on bringing social justice for the injustice on behalf of the clients. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were some of the most powerful women in the U.S. in the 1800s. These two women had many things in common. They were both abolitionist, speakers, and authors. Susan herself was the NAWSA’s first president, and Elizabeth’s life efforts helped her bring up the 19th Amendment. I stated that everybody had the right to vote. Both, of these women had or were apart of a company were Susan managed and Elizabeth wrote. They were a powerful team they actually printed an illegal paper called the “Revolution”. They actually met each other for the first time in 1851.

Grace Abbott (1878-1939) was an influential social reformer and political activist, who provided numerous contributions in areas of child welfare and child labor legislation, immigrants’ rights, social security, and women’s rights. Using her intelligence, charismatic nature, and strong values, Abbott spent her life fighting tirelessly for what she believed in (National Association of Social Workers [NASW], 2004). To this day, her effects on legislation leave a strong impact in the field of social work.
As usual, women and blacks were taken away the chance of change from their original state. Women continued to endure suffrage by being perceived as an inferior and being pressed with the challenges in the home and workplace. Similarly, blacks continue to be obscured of rights, being treated as a non-humans and given the worst possible situations in any job or social matter. However, Jane Addams, founder of the Hull House, always seemed to have an open door to those in need. She worked to solve problems and provide better living and working conditions and advocating for workers. First off, clinical social workers work one-on-one with individuals by utilizing psychosocial casework to improve their client’s lives. Social workers at the micro level typically provide case management by coordinating and monitoring services, developing a treatment plan, advocating for new services, providing psychoeducation, and by helping clients learn more about their specific disorder (Marx). From the humble beginning of Social Work there have been many people who have tirelessly worked, fought, and dedicated their lives advocating for the people in our world who are disadvantaged. Furthermore, many of these people have been women who not only were strong enough to fight for the rights of others, but also had to fight the forces who thought that women were in some way second hand citizens themselves. These women were brave and determined enough to break out of the box that society placed them in, and stand up for the social injustices that they saw taking place, and try to make a difference. Of the many women from the early days of Social Work, none fought harder for social reform than Grace Abbott. Grace Abbott spent her life fighting to enact legislation for the betterment of society as a whole.
Mary Richmond and Jane Addams are two very influential women in social work history. They helped shape what social work is today. Mary Richmond helped with her charity organizations and Jane Addams with the settlement movement. Not only did they help shape the history of social work, but they paved the road for the generalist practice as well with their work at the micro and macro levels.
